Three gumball machines filled with brightly colored candies
Admiring Thiebaud’s paintings, abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman told him that “[t]hose European surrealists are boys compared to what you can do with a gumball machine. That’s a real surreal object in you.” daily.jstor.org/wayne-thieba...

Wayne Thiebaud’s Sweet Take on American Art - JSTOR Daily
The beloved American painter rejected attempts to categorize his work as a Pop Art as he experimented with texture, light, and nostalgia.
Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) was fired from Disney for being a union man, went on to create topographical models of Japan in WWII, and was labelled a "Pop Artist" by critics. He outlived all the other Pop Artists, and most of his critics, and thought Warhol was 👎 daily.jstor.org/wayne-thieba...

The arch in milan with some sort of ball of light sculpture in the middle that would rhythmically open to music
A wild week at the Olympics in Milan! The figure skating was incredible, but I'm about ready to drop everything and take up speed skating now. Just...wow.

Wet or drooling sea servants stare at the viewer. The page says BFS Horizons #18.
The opening sentences of The Toll Bridge by Arendse Lund
"I saw him first."
"But look at him -- you know he's just my type."
"You hooked the last one."
"That was ages ago."
"Oh please," followed by a wistful sigh. "He was a good one, wasn't he?"
I just found out that British Fantasy Society published my award-winning story "The Toll Bridge" at the end of 2025, so I'm sneaking one more story in here for award consideration!

An icy expanse, with a wooden dock for the ferry, and the sun glinting off the buildings on the other side of the harbor.
Copenhagen harbour has completely frozen over! That shiny surface in the distance? That's just smooth ice 🥶

A slender wooden troll with a long beard pulls a rabbit out of a hat
And a magician troll who, by pulling a rabbit out of hat, is clearly trying to trick you into thinking he's not magical at all. Won't fool me!

Sunrise over the icy hills of Bergen
Good morning from the icy hills of Bergen, where the sun rises delightfully late, meaning I can sneak a hike in at a reasonable hour.

The hunt for a stolen Jackson Pollock — and answers to a family’s pain
Decades after a brazen art theft drove Merry White’s father to despair, federal agents closed in on one last missing work. For White, the search is personal.
Accidental friends with Jackson Pollock, the White family had their home broken into and three of his paintings stolen. In the decades since, only two pieces have been recovered. This is a good but very stressful read since it's so personal for the family. www.washingtonpost.com/entertainmen...

A delicately carved box with runes and scenes
The Sutton Hoo helmet! I visit it every time I go in. Did you see the Franks Casket next to it? It's so inconspicuous and yet the more you look at it, the more intricate and impressive the carvings appear.

I'm so over all this jetlag. On the other hand, I started a French surrealist novel at 5am, which felt oddly like the right time and so far I have no complaints.
