Martin "Marty" MacIntyre, a longtime street safety advocate and SFBike member, passed away in February. Martin helped get the first ever bike lane on Lake Street through neighbor-led civiv engagement. He will be missed in the biking community. 🧡

"When a car blocks a bike lane", says our Director of Advocacy Claire Amable, "cyclists have to veer around that car into traffic, which can be going as fast as 40 miles an hour."
Physical infrastructure to protect bike lanes is hands down the best way to protect people biking.
"Every time someone rides a bike—for transportation, for joy, for health, for protest, or for survival—they’re moving through systems shaped by public policy, power, and priorities. Who gets safe streets. Who doesn’t. Who breathes clean air. Who is protected—and who is put at risk."
We recognize this general strike is only one part of a wider move towards liberation for everyone. Transportation justice means freedom of movement. We’re also encouraging everyone in the cycling community here in SF to join in tomorrow’s solidarity ride.
SFBike is shutting down business as usual today for staff to stand in solidarity with those fighting systems of oppression in Minnesota, the U.S., and worldwide, by participating in the national day of action.
On Friday, we launched the signature campaign for Connect Bay Area, a five-county transit funding measure headed for the November 2026 ballot. I wrote the legislation, and @connectbayareatransit is collecting signatures right now to qualify this measure for the ballot.
One great example we're excited about is the Bay Skyway project that will eventually link Oakland to Treasure Island and downtown SF with a bike and pedestrian path! mtc.ca.gov/planning/tra...
A thriving downtown SF doesn't have to mean more traffic congestion if we continue to invest in sustainable transportation investments that get more people using active transportation and transit to move around the city.
Kickoff event for the Connect Bay Area Transit campaign is on Friday, Jan 23 @10am, Embarcadero Plaza! Join to support getting a robust regional transit funding measure on the ballot, and help save Bay Area transit. RSVP for more info.

New DCWP Commissioner Sam Levine pledged to crack down on app companies that pressure delivery workers to use e-bikes and cars recklessly.
While we're cautiously optimistic that fatalities are trending lower than 2024, which was the deadliest year since the start of VZ, there is more work to do to make our roads safer and modeshift away from car dependency, which we must do for our climate goals. www.sfchronicle.com/projects/202...
“Having the consistency of automated speed enforcement and automated red light enforcement has had such an impact … We want to see it expanded throughout the city, and I think that the mayor’s initiative is going to give a lot of power behind that.”
-Christopher White, Executive Director at SFBike

Supervisor Wong is already an experienced public servant, with whom we’ve worked on improving transportation options of City College students, in particular his support for the Frida Kahlo Quick Build. @alanwon
Congratulations to Alan Wong, who Mayor Lurie has appointed as supervisor for District 4; Sunset residents deserve someone who will focus on their needs, and we hope he’ll prioritize safe streets and a vibrant neighborhood.
Though his identity isn’t known to us yet, our thoughts are with the person’s friends and family as they navigate this heartbreak, and our hearts are heavy today – no one should ever lose their lives while riding a bicycle on our city’s streets. Read our full statement 👇 sfbike.org/news/our-sta...
We learned yesterday that a man riding on a bike was struck and killed late on Sunday, November 16, by a person driving a car, at Alemany and Naglee in the Outer Mission. The person driving the car fled the scene, but a suspect has been apprehended by SFPD.
We look forward to sitting down with Supervisor Alcaraz and her staff along with our enthusiastic, dedicated members in her district to discuss the future of transportation and people-centered spaces in the Sunset.
To do that, she will need to work tirelessly to support the funding measures that will be on the ballot next year, and we are ready to support her in those efforts.
We agree with Supervisor Alcaraz that looking back will only cause divisiveness. We hope that, as someone who loves her district, she will be laser focused on ensuring the ongoing strength of our transit systems and championing vibrant, sustainable streets in the Sunset and the city at large.
Congratulations to the interim Supervisor for District 4, Beya Alcaraz! We’re excited to work with her on active transportation projects in her district and across San Francisco.
"Sunset Dunes is a testament to what happens when San Francisco thinks big and invests in public spaces. [...] And it reminds us that we shouldn’t let fear of change keep us from imagining something better for our neighborhoods." www.sfchronicle.com/opinion/open...
Thrilled that SB 720 is now state law! Thank you to Governor @gavinnewsom.bsky.social for signing the bill, and SAFE for their leadership on this bill, and to all our members for sending emails and making phone calls to Sacramento to make our voices heard!

SB 720 creates an equitable and efficient approach for California cities to implement lifesaving red-light enforcement cameras. We need to send a surge of support to the Governor today! 🚦
As @kqednews.kqed.org reported last week, automated speed enforcement for reckless and dangerous driving is already effective -- an SFMTA study tracking speeds along 15 of the corridors where the cameras have been installed found an average 72% reduction in speeding. www.kqed.org/news/1205860...
