Trump knows that if he loses the midterms he is, best case scenario, a lame duck President. Much more worryingly for him is he faces endless investigation and likely a (successful) 3rd impeachment.
For him, and his cohorts, it is existential.

I thought Mark Kermode's review of the Melania movie was really insightful. Midway through the movie he realised what it was in its essentials; a heist movie, a movie of a Crime Family taking over a legitimate enterprise to turn it entirely to servicing their own needs and those of their capos.
With every passing day, the USA creeps closer and closer to being, in reality, a Banana Republic; a corrupt and servile state run for the private benefit of an oligarchy. It's mortifying and terrifying in equal measure to watch.
