I am losing in the fight to steer people away from Substack. I underestimated how little moral compass people actually have.
But if more of my base goes over to Substack, I'm gonna pivot, stop doing what I'm doing and go do something else. I don't want to help people build there. Nightmare shit.

📉 What DID NOT work?
The LinkedIn newsletter was more friction than function.
She cut it less than halfway through the experiment.
🎙️ Her surprising secret weapon?
A private podcast feed for referrers.
It outperformed the actual prize giveaway: refer ONE person and get access to the private feed.
🔁 The referral flywheel
One person shared it → 15 new subs → 1 of them shared →
21 more.
That’s 36 people from one share.
✍️ How she launched with just ~1/4 of the emails written ahead of time.
Yep. The rest?
Written the day before—and sometimes—the day-of.
It was messy, it's not advised. But it worked.
✅ Why she started 30 Days of Growth

It wasn’t just about list growth.
It was a wild experiment in cross-promotion data.
Chenell published 30 newsletter editions in 30 Days.
She called it 30 Days of Growth.
That's a lot for someone who typically just publishes once a week.

👀 Wanna see how I structured the onboarding?
So I made some changes in the onboarding process.
→ I built a specific onboarding flow for recommendation-based subscribers.
The results:
✅ Unsubscribes & bounces dropped from 4% to 0.5% per send
✅ Open rates for that segment jumped to 37.5%
✅ And my overall deliverability significantly improved
❌ They didn’t really know me
❌ They hadn’t seen my landing page
❌ They hadn’t read my newsletter
So when I started publishing my newsletter after the hiatus…
📉 Open rates dropped
📈 Unsubscribes spiked
No bueno 👎
I realized I couldn’t treat these Creator Network subscribers like everyone else.
