It occurs to me that Sadiq Khan is in reality what Sir Kier advertises himself as: working class kid made good turned blandly competent centre left administrator. It turns out I don't mind it when someone really is that! Not my favourite politics but definitely in the "willing to vote for it" range.

@oelayat

Mufti Naomi Wolf has consulted the sacred texts (Google Al Overview) and issued her fatwa

quote tweeting
Dr. Naomi Wolf @naomirwolf

I asked Al, "Can you wear a crop top for Iftar?" As Rama Duwaji is doing:

Al Overview
It is generally advised not to wear a crop top for Iftar. Ramadan is a time for modesty and respect, requiring covered shoulders and knees. Crop tops, which expose the midriff, are considered too revealing for traditional, public, or family Iftar gatherings. Opt for modest, loose, or flowing, comfortable clothing.

It is super rude by the way, in observant Muslim norms, for the hostess to reveal her midriff at an Iftar celebration in the presence of men who are not her husband and in the presence of Mahmoud Khalil's wife, who is veiled as is far more religiously customary.

On the one hand, this is extremely bad; on the other hand, the race is on to grab the band name 'Extreme Criminal Protest Group'.

NEW ANALYSIS: UK emissions fell 2.4% in 2025 as coal fell to a 400-year low. Incredibly, we used less coal last year than than in 1600, when Queen Elizabeth I was on the throne and Shakespeare was writing Hamlet.

Feeling this so deeply rn. My Wire Mother literally has the trackpad 3 inches to the left in order to accommodate a card reader for no reason.

PANEL 1: NARRATOR: "Cultivating the measured NPR cadence and placid deference to the military that characterizes the ideal neoliberal subject, Clark Kent returns to the editorial meeting..." A group of DAILY PLANET reporters are in a meeting, Clark Kent is responding to a question from his boss. CLARK: "Well, chief, the bombing campaign--"

PANEL 2: Clark is talking and the other reporters and co-workers look unhappy. CLARK: "Obviously war in the region is not-ah-"ideal," but regime change could ultimately provide socioeconomic benefits that far outweigh the regrettable civilian casualties..." CLARK (thinking): "As Superman, last son of Krypton, these words of course sicken me; however, it's Clark Kent's job to manufacture consent!"

PANEL 3: (inset in a larger panel) One reporter is whispering to another. REPORTER: "Kent is such an off-putting sociopath" REPORTER 2: "I hope he kills himself". An arrow points to this inset panel that reads "Thanks to super-hearing" from Clark's ear. Clark is smiling and thinking to himself. CLARK (thinking): "Looks like my secret identity as Clark Kent is safe...FOR NOW!"

This is also such bad advice on the NYT's part; the best way to play this is surely just to knock on their door in a polite, friendly fashion and explain to them that you're the gay couple upstairs and you have a daughter. 18-19 is a prime age for learning that Other People Exist.

Talking in veiled terms, I should be clear. It's always at multiple removes which can, sadly, increase the desire to Do Detective Work And Figure Out What The Origin Is and whoops now I'm the hairy clussy PI.

I have done this but occasionally run into the problem where everyone I follow is talking about The Hairy Clussy Issue and eventually I crack and take the bait and look it up using the search function, and I am Never Rewarded

I unfollowed that person and now I rarely, if ever, come across this content. So the next time you find yourself thinking, "this whole place is crazy! I'm seeing all this wild discourse or whatever?" just ask yourself, "who's reskeeting all this hairy clussy into my timeline?" and act accordingly.

This reminds me of an old lady in our local NextDoor group who logs in every day and posts a (rhyming, poor scansion) poem about her life/the birds/the weather. If she doesn't log in she will explain later what prevented her. Lately, she's missed a lot more days due to medical problems 😢

It's the exact kind of platform-but-no-actual-responsibilities role that, earlier in their careers, Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage would have revelled in. I'm not saying this justifies keeping a bunch of depraved rich people in surveilled luxury like pampered zoo animals, but it needs careful thought

As always I'm v torn because I hate the monarchy but I also live in fear of the kind of people who, if everything else was unchanged, would stand as candidates in an election for Head of State.

Christie et al: the 'whodunnit' element is a displacement of the inherent risk and uncertainty involved in trusting yourself to a single partner for life
Berkeley: we all agree that morally speaking murder isn't a crime if the victim is a bitch but... what if but something Went Wrong with the murder

Sometimes I get weary of the fact that almost all Golden Age detective novels are secretly heterosexual marriage plots in disguise, but then I read a bunch of Anthony Berkeley novels which are mostly about 'what if a woman was such a bitch that she deserved to be murdered' & I yearn for the m p.
