If you don't subscribe to the FREE @goodtape.com newsletter, now's a great time. This week we preview the new BBC podcast 'The Interface,' cohosted by @karenhao.bsky.social, @nickywoolf.bsky.social & Thomas Germain. I talked to Germain about how every story is a tech story when you think about it.
Itβs our most requested article so far: @briwellen.bsky.social profiles our illustrious cover star, Nicole Byer.
Delightful, sharp, and candid as ever, Nicole shares the story of her rise to podcast queendom, which started with an edible at LAX and spawned a multiverse of comedy shows.
The inter-corporate struggle for dominance in video podcasting wages on. Now that the cameras are rolling on creators, will YouTube or Spotify emerge as the video podcast platform of choice? And where does that leave audio-first shows?

Community businesses have been steadily on the rise in podcasting for the last 5 years. I made up this framework last week to spotlight the key ingredients to any successful podcast communityβwhich ideally involves participation from both the hosts and the fans.

After organizing informal podcast coffee meetups and happy hours in Brooklyn and LA for the last two years, it's time to formalize this effort under a bold new brand through @goodtape.com
I'm pleased to introduce Off The Record.
Once again, a lot more senior people needed to go to jail for a very long time for Iran-Contra, Bush-era torture, & all the other previously unpunished, wildly illegal & unconstitutional executive branch crimes that have led us inexorably to this utterly shameful, horrifying moment as a country.

From 19th-century society pages to todayβs celebrity podcasts, our obsession with the lives of the elite runs deep. @everyverything.bsky.social traces the evolution of this cultural fixation and how podcasts add a new layer of intimacy to an old tradition.
Ultimately, the shows we make in podcasting needs to be greater than the sum of its parts. Audiences might be drawn initially to a show with a public figure or celebrity, but what compels them to stay? And what compels a media buyer to invest?
I enjoyed talking to @adweek.bsky.social about Overtimeβs evolving business model.
The point of all of this The most illiterate men alive were gassing themselves up because the computer had gotten some small degree better at producing dog shit that had the general production values of a circa 2004 video game cutscene. Delighting in the approach of a spiritually and culturally dead future devoid of art and meaning. You do have to admit that a new Narcos season starring Brad Pitt and Mr. Beast and Travis Kelce sounds pretty sick though. There's only one flaw I can see in this supposed AI-generated future of seven fingered bikini babes with death behind their eyes and photorealistic Family Guy pornos: I donβt understand where they think their personalized sense of aesthetics they plan to input into the computer is going to come from down the line when all human artists have been driven out of business. If you want something perfectly tailored 1:1 to your own taste meant solely for you to experience alone you can already do that just by sitting there and thinking about
