After First Big Overseas Trip, Ocasio-Cortez Expresses Frustrations
AOC came to Munich to warn about the far-right. Coverage focused on 2028 and verbal missteps.
She gave me a call to discuss.
βEveryoneβs got this story wrong, that this is about me running for president,β she said. βGlobal democracies are on fire the world over.β

Buttigieg and Booker Lead Push to Hammer Republicans on Health Care
Went to La Crosse, Wis., to hear Pete Buttigiegβs latest town hall.
He and other potential 2028 candidates, like Cory Booker and AOC, are offering a preview of how Democrats could take back the House: hammer Republicans on their Medicaid and health care votes.

They Wanted a Conservative State. They Might Get a Democratic Representative Instead.
They Wanted a Conservative State. They Might Get a Democratic Representative Instead.
The passage of Proposition 50, which redrew Californiaβs congressional map, means that all of the stateβs conservative north is likely to be represented by Democrats.

Maybe because this is a story about the situation in rural Northern California? Itβs not a feature about the gerrymanders elsewhereβ¦though those are certainly relevant in the broader redistricting battle, hence their mention.
Hope you enjoyed the photos!

Marc Benioff Says Trump Should Send Guard Troops to San Francisco
Marc Benioff, who once donated to Democrats, told @heatherknightsf.bsky.social that he thinks Trump should send the National Guard into San Francisco.
βI fully support the president,β he said. βI think heβs doing a great job.β

Can Mamdaniβs Energetic Campaign Be a Blueprint for Democrats?
You can cling to the idea that Iβm out to write a hit piece on Mamdani. That doesnβt make it true, sorry.
In fact, hereβs a story I wrote asking whether other Dems could learn from him. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/26/u...

Iβm simply replying to the criticism. Happy to engage with it, but some people are implying things about the story that just arenβt there!
And yes, I do think itβs good for public trust to engage.

Missed this. You have a lot of criticisms, but will address 2:
-The reason for singling out the βtopβ filers is itβs a potential data point re maybe high-income individuals are leaving.
-Would have liked to include Tiffany! I had a quote from her but got cut for space. 2 other DSA ppl quoted.

Iβm sorry, I just donβt agree. There is certainly a pro-socialist sentiment, as evidenced by the city council members being elected! Thereβs backlash to them. The conflict is playing out as Portland has big problems, some depicted in photos. I donβt think itβs hard to grasp both of those things.

I donβt agree. Nowhere in this story do we argue the socialists are responsible for Portlandβs problems, as people here seem to be suggesting.

I didnβt βstealβ their story. I got the idea from their great story, and went out and reported my own piece that led to my conclusions.
I also did credit them and link to them several times in the story, so now youβre just making things up. Sounds like something a disingenuous worm would do!

I think we make it clear that those things predate the socialists, and instead they make up the bulk of the debate now between the socialists and the moderates. But I take it you disagree.

No, itβs that I think youβre wrong.
I donβt think this paints a scary picture of the city. It doesnβt depict Portland as a war zone. Itβs not designed to get anyone to vote one way or another.
What it does do is be honest that the city still has big problems, that both sides are grappling with.

Not meaning for it to be a scare piece. If anything, we suggest the handwringing over the socialists is somewhat overblown.

Right. The county has played a big role in keeping the pre-K program, despite the governorβs efforts.
I understand people feel itβs overstated, but:
βAlthough moderates are spooked by their talk of higher taxes and social housing β¦ the socialists have not yet tried to muscle through such policies.β

I disagree that it suggests thereβs something inherently wrong with it.
βThey argue that the dire rhetoric about them reflects the anxieties of an out-of-touch establishment, refusing to cede power to a younger generation focused on the working class.β
