Maybe because this is a story about the situation in rural Northern California? It’s not a feature about the gerrymanders elsewhere…though those are certainly relevant in the broader redistricting battle, hence their mention.

I’m sorry, I just don’t agree. There is certainly a pro-socialist sentiment, as evidenced by the city council members being elected! There’s backlash to them. The conflict is playing out as Portland has big problems, some depicted in photos. I don’t think it’s hard to grasp both of those things.

I didn’t “steal” their story. I got the idea from their great story, and went out and reported my own piece that led to my conclusions.

I think we make it clear that those things predate the socialists, and instead they make up the bulk of the debate now between the socialists and the moderates. But I take it you disagree.

I don’t think this paints a scary picture of the city. It doesn’t depict Portland as a war zone. It’s not designed to get anyone to vote one way or another.

I understand people feel it’s overstated, but:

I disagree that it suggests there’s something inherently wrong with it.
