It’s been terrifying to have almost every year in the past 20 years be a lesson in how many people with power make decisions about who lives and dies with little thought or care or even a clear idea as to why they’re doing anything, and it’s terrifying that it seems to be getting worse

Some will try to make this disappear by pinning it on a few bad apples, especially given Sherrone Moore’s involvement, but it’s been pretty clear there’s been a deep moral rot in the Michigan football program for a while now—yes, even dating back to Bo.

What's Missing from Emerald Fennell's "Wuthering Heights"
Should you read the book first?
Emerald Fennell’s "Wuthering Heights" adaptation is, at times, very fun and visually gorgeous. But it leaves out the very thing that gives the novel its force. I wrote about what’s missing — and why that omission means the film ultimately doesn't work.

Can’t help but think billionaires seeing how much influence they can have post-Citizens United has only heightened their desire to hoard wealth and exploit the rest of us for every penny we have.

Six Books Sitting on My Nightstand Right Now
Welcome to my inner consciousness!
I’m always curious about the books people keep on their nightstands—it’s a small but telling snapshot of what’s on their mind and holding their attention. Here's the stack of books on mine!

Hockey romance novels are in the news. Here’s why they’re so popular.
The subgenre captured mainstream attention after a brouhaha involving NHL player Alex Wennberg.
The show Heated Rivalry only exists because of an article by Rachel Kurzius inspired Jacob Tierney to reach out to Rachel Reid. Today @washingtonpost.com laid Rachel off.

I worry that as we narrow the range of what we can talk about, think about, spend our time on, our ability to make expansive art and language shrinks, too, and so does our ability then to solve big problems and think creatively - all of which is the terrible point of fascism

I think that *cringe* is overused. I particularly think that it is overused by people who have a difficult time feeling and naming their feelings. That's a lot of people.

screenshot of text from Adam Serwer in The Atlantic: "The secret fear of the morally depraved is that virtue is actually common, and that they're the ones who are alone. In Minnesota, all of the ideological cornerstones of MAGA have been proved false at once. Minnesotans, not the armed thugs of ICE and the Border Patrol, are brave. Minnesotans have shown that their community is socially cohesive - because of its diversity and not in spite of it. Minnesotans have found and loved one another in a world atomized by social media, where empty men have tried to fill their lonely soul with lies about their own inherent superiority. Minnesotans have preserved everything worthwhile about "Western civilization," while armed brutes try to tear it down by force."

Profound gratitude to everyone in the Minneapolis streets. You are so brave, so righteous. But you should not have to carry the burden of our government's cowardice. Solidarity forever.

Protecting the Freedom to Vote Through State Voting Rights Acts
State VRAs remove barriers to voting, helping lead the way toward a more inclusive and accountable government that is truly of, by and for the people it was created to serve.
Amid increasing federal attacks on voting rights, states must proactively safeguard the freedom to vote. Campaign Legal Center and partners developed a model state Voting Rights Act to help lawmakers and advocates protect voting rights in their own states.
