Despite a new fare hike and the fact that 1 in 5 riders struggle to afford the fare, the preliminary budget seem to exclude expansion of the Fair Fares program.
In the final budget, riders expect the Mayor and Council to broaden eligibility and deliver free/reduced bus and subway fares to 2M NYers.

Setting Fair Fares eligibility to at least 300% of the federal poverty level would allow a household of 4 earning up to $96,450 to qualify for half-price subway fare. And by eliminating fares for those who currently qualify, Fair Fares can offer us true universal access to affordable transit!

Opinion | This Is How Mamdani Can Pay for Free Buses
"Manhattan has roughly 140,000 curb spaces suitable for metering... Those spaces could each generate roughly $5,000 a year, producing around $700 million annually, nearly enough to fund free buses by itself." www.nytimes.com/2025/12/02/o...

Voices of Passengers: Why New York Needs a Bus Mayor - El Diario NY
Too often, bus riders like myself are left out of the conversation
"We need a Real Bus Mayor. Someone who rides with us, who understands that every minute a bus sits in traffic is a minute stolen from a worker, a parent, a student. @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is that leader." eldiariony.com/2025/10/27/v...

Along it's route from Downtown to Kings Plaza, the B41 spends more time at red lights than moving. Right now, the entire trips takes 58 minutes. But,
"...if the bus were traveling the corridor totally unimpeded, it would need only 16 minutes to go from end to end."
