The Connection Center pantries have served more than 1,200 visitors since opening, with data showing a positive correlation between usage and academic performance. We applaud Gateway for investing in such a holistic approach to student success!

Connection Centers provides everything from free shelf-stable food to professional attire and access to local nonprofits. Representatives from regional colleges and universities also frequently visit the Connection Center to speak with students about transfer options!

Gateway Technical College, one of our #MetallicaScholars partner schools, is committed to helping students prevent or overcome obstacles that hinder success. To do this, the school established Connection Centers on two of its campuses, with a third location coming soon.

“Without the support of the Metallica Scholars Initiative, it would have been much harder for me to stay on track.” She noted, “Thank you, Metallica, for giving me a step up and for thinking of community college students, particularly those of us who live on the reservation.”

But welding is all she has her mind set on. Joyce was recently accepted to Navajo Technical University’s three-year veterinarian program in Crownpoint, New Mexico.

As a Metallica Scholar, Joyce takes full advantage of her grant funds to make the 55-mile commute to class just a bit easier. “The support of gas cards through the Metallica Scholars Initiative makes it possible for me to get to class,” Joyce said.

A first-generation college student, Joyce will earn her associate degree from NPC this coming May at the age of 18. “My family is very proud of me,” she said. “I am the first person to graduate from college.”

Meet Joyce Lander, a second-year welding student and one of our #MetallicaScholars at Northland Pioneer College’s Holbrook campus, whose determination is taking her far beyond the welding booth.

This investment helps students feel seen, supported, and valued, and serves as a reminder that no one is alone in this journey.

MBK also helps sponsor meals at campus cafeterias, so students can enjoy hot breakfast and lunch. Beyond providing food, MBK offers a sense of stability, confidence, and unwavering support to students pursuing their degrees.

Inside MBK, students can take full advantage of the program, no questions asked. Everyone is treated with respect and understanding, and staff remind students that seeking help is integral to achieving success, not a sign of failure.

“I found myself juggling the demands of tuition, books, gas, and contributing to household responsibilities, to the extent that I resorted to skipping meals simply to stretch my budget.”

At Polk State College’s food pantry, known as “My Brother’s Keeper,” over 1,000 students were served last academic year.

Terry received #MetallicaScholars funding to help cover tuition and course materials, citing the financial assistance as a factor in his academic success. We’re so proud to have provided support along your journey. The sky is the limit, Terry!

“Education is the key to social mobility.” This belief was instilled in Terry and his siblings by their mother at an early age, making Terry determined to better his life through higher education. Following his interest in aviation, he enrolled in Guilford Technical Community College.

We’re proud to be part of Mylissa’s education by helping cover PPE, OSHA fees, and textbooks. “Because of the #MetallicaScholars grant assisting me, I didn’t miss out on anything. I am forever grateful to Metallica for all their support to make my educational experience as successful as it was.”

Last May, the Shepard Steel team in Hartford welcomed Mylissa aboard as a flux core welder. In the next five to ten years, she aspires to continue her work at Shepard Steel while pursuing her side passion in the automotive repair field.

From the moment Mylissa stepped into the Advanced Manufacturing Program shop at CT State Asnuntuck, she was hooked. “I enjoyed stick welding the most, or anything in the welding shop! Hands-on was the best over theory classes.”

And he has the support of his father, a controls engineer Aiyonta cites as an inspiration, and his mother, who he says is “my number one supporter. I couldn’t do this without her.”

Inspired by Metallica’s philanthropy and the #MetallicaScholars grant, Aiyonta hopes to one day mentor others.

Aiyonta is still balancing responsibilities, but now they include school, work, and family. He has a young son to raise and his girlfriend, whom he told a year ago, “something big is coming,” which they are now seeing come to fruition.

“Getting this job so fast made me rethink everything. I thought I had years to figure it out, but now I sit and wonder, what’s next? There are so many paths I can take. Learning PLCs in class and applying the knowledge at work helps it all make sense.”

In the five years since graduating, he’s explored cybersecurity, IT, and CNC machining, which led to an internship at Modine Manufacturing, where he now works as an electro-mechanical technician while pursuing his Advanced Manufacturing Technologies degree at Gateway Technical College.

Aiyonta doesn’t sit still. While in high school, he balanced football, three choirs, e-sports, and track—keeping his grades high enough to stay in extracurriculars. 🧵

Last October, roughly 700 students visited the food pantries, and with nearly 60% of Atlantic Cape students receiving financial assistance, food insecurity remains a challenge for many. A recent study showed 39% of New Jersey community college students faced food insecurity in the previous month.

Hunger knows no boundaries, & at Atlantic Cape Community College, they know food insecurity is a challenge for millions. At each of their three campuses, Atlantic Cape’s Food Pantries offer free pre-packaged, boxed, refrigerated, & frozen food items, plus essential supplies to all students in need.
