The Magnavox Odyssey is almost exactly as old as me.
Might explain why I loved that font as a kid. ๐
Rally Bike, a Taito arcade game from 1988. The title screen.
Rally Bike, a Taito arcade game from 1988. Driving across a suspension-bridge, with lots of nice dramatic shadows to hint at the shape of the structure.
Rally Bike, a Taito arcade game from 1988. Is this between stages, or have I just stopped for fuel? Guess I have to play this again to remind me what it's all about. ๐
Rally Bike, a Taito arcade game from 1988. I like the wee helicopter flying overhead. Gives me distinct Spyhunter vibes. ๐
Rally Bike (arcade)
I must have taken too many screen-shots over the years, coz I have snaps of an arcade game called Rally Bike that I can't remember taking at all. Think I have to revisit it now. Gorgeous SWIV-like GFX. A bit like Zippy Race/Traverse USA got a makeover. ๐
Was surprised that I didn't know about this. Then I saw when it was released, which was about when most of my friends had moved to Amiga or PC, my brother was no longer buying Zzap!64, so I was playing the C64 back catalogue, rather than finding about anything new.

I think they over-complicated it with the ice skating event.
There were some moves that only worked when you were facing a particular way. Guess they wanted people to take the time to learn it. They underestimated my lack of attention-span. ๐
And lets not forget the sequel. For me, it was the perfect follow-up: futuristic metalic landscape, single-shots become double-shots, add a homing missile, and sprinkle some wee call-back easter eggs throughout the game. I've always got a spare credit for Time Pilot '84 too. ๐
Time Pilot (AKA Space Pilot) was always worth spending a credit on. ๐
A standard beige Commodore 64. ๐
I do like the look of the clear ones..
But โ I must be old โ it's the basic beige ones that make me feel most at home.

Arnie shooting at the predator.
It's just like The Matrix.
There's only one movie, really.

The Epyx multi-sports game "Winter Games" for the C64. The title screen.
The Epyx multi-sports game "Winter Games" for the C64. Just skating along, listening to the quite boppy music.
The Epyx multi-sports game "Winter Games" for the C64. Initiating a jump is easy enough. Will she land well? Probably not. ๐
The Epyx multi-sports game "Winter Games" for the C64. The event is over, and the score is certainly not spectacular. Do I feel motivated to try it again? No. Not really. ๐
Winter Games (C64)
With the Milano Cortina 2026 games over, once again the ice skating was amazing. Once again, revisiting the skating events in Winter Games, I still can't get comfortable with the controls. ..Maybe it'll click in 2030.

The end of the week.
My brain is trying to work out what to have for dinner tonight..

The witty driver names on Pitstop II for the C64.
Oh! How did I forget Pitstop II?
(I was thinking this might be the Epyx guys giving a nod to Revs.. But it turns out Revs was the later game.) ๐
There were people who hacked it, and knew how to search for text in the game and change it.. I usually didn't realise until the starting grid was displayed. Looked innocent enou.. Ho boy! ๐ฎ
(Their ideas lacked subtlety though.) ๐
Iโd get derailed on the weapon varieties pretty quick..
Morning Star
Duck on a chain
Woodpecker on a chain
Hedgehog on a chain
etc.
๐
Huh.. Interesting that they went for unfilled polys. ๐ค
The first version of Blaster I saw was on the Apple II, I thought.
Can't find any evidence it exists now, so maybe it was a fever-dream. ๐
The arcade game is a cool trippy experience.

Uridium (C64)
You ever wonder how much longer some of those Uridium demo games would be if there was some kind of obstacle-sensing algorithm for that ship?
๐
Winter Games โ Hot Dog (C64)
Freestyle Skiing is the proper name for this event now. But Hot Dog sounds cool, so I won't take any issue with that. Besides, it's a really fun event. If you time it right you can fit in two moves in a single jump.. If you time it right. ๐
Split Personalities for the C64. The Sugar level. ๐
Split Personalities for the C64. The Bogart level.
Split Personalities for the C64. The Monroe level.
Split Personalities for the C64. The title screen.
Split Personalities takes the old sliding puzzle and really jazzes it up for the home computer. It's those snippets of Whittaker music that help set the urgent pace you should be feeling.
Argh! Bomb! ๐ฃ Argh!
etc.

Epyx's third Olympics game, Winter Games. Shooting at some targets in the Biathlon event.
Winter Games (C64)
I might only get to catch random Winter Games footage when I get home at the end of the day. But I haven't seen any of the biathlon at all. Which disappoints me, as it's my favourite Epyx Winter Games event.

A real genuine modem.
Last year, a colleague finally decommissioned this modem. ๐ค I *think* it's the last modem in use at work. We're an odd bunch, so I don't guarantee it. ๐
Interview with a 'young adult' on the street.
Yeah, I remember what it was like as a 'young adult', having to pretend to not like Doom around girls. There were so many hot girls pretending to like Doom. I was embarrassing. ๐
(Just kidding: I was never around girls.)

Some would say this is a map of New Zealand. Some would say it's an artistic interpretation of what their dog threw-up on the carpet. Who can tell? ๐
This, according to Google, is what New Zealand looks like. This looks about right to me. But given the weird circuitous routes I've taken between Christchurch, Queenstown, and Dunedin, I'm probably not a good authority on that. ๐
The other bit of artwork crime perpetuated by the New Zealand Story artists.. And one that makes any New Zealander to "what the heck?" Their map of New Zealand. Which looks like it was drawn by a three year old. A drunk three year old. ๐ฎ
(Google Map for comparison.)
New Zealand Story on the Amiga. Mr Walrus is about to bag a bunch of kiwi birds! (Good job one of them is able to escape.) ๐
New Zealand Story on the Amiga. Level 1. So if your kiwi buddy is in a cage, how were they able to draw such an ornate graffiti? ๐ค
New Zealand Story on the Amiga. Level 2. Fortunately there's the occasional view of trees and blue sky breaking up all that yellow and brown.
New Zealand Story on the Amiga. Level 3. The different flyable transports are good at breaking up the platforming action.
New Zealand Story (Amiga)
The Amiga conversion of the fun arcade platform game, where you have to save your kiwi friends, who have been kidnapped by an evil walrus.
It's an enjoyable game, but I wish the artists had gone for backgrounds that aren't so dominated by yellow+brown. ๐ค
Carrier Command was on a disk that came with my (2nd hand) Amiga500. No instructions, unfortunately. But it was amazing how intuitive it was to control the carrier, its weapons systems, and its various craft.
Still fun to idly tinker around with today. One day I may even try to play it properly. ๐
Love the cartoon-y look of the players and aliens. Quite abstract enemy creatures, but they still have character to them.
For those crazy people who don't want to wait for the cassette to load, or for whom clicking through the chapter-points is too much effort: ๐

Super Pipeline II (C64)
Loading Super Pipeline II off of cassette is a surprisingly soothing process. ๐ An excellent game. I think I could make it further, but setting chapter points for all the funny intermissions was the most important thing to do. ๐

Dungeon of Fire? Sounds cool.
Love elemental references in any RPG. ๐
Makes me think of another RPG I enjoyed: ADOM.
There was a level, I'm thinking it was an ice level? But maybe it was just frictionless. You couldn't walk. You had to move by throwing things, so you'd slide the other way. ๐
A bike with a rocket engine attached. ๐
There's a wee voice in my brain saying "You know what that bike needs? A rocket power-up!"
