Just tested out @sprk.so, @fedica.com, and @popfeed.social

Each has merit; all three have the same issue, though: permissions. Feels like we're still at the "just grant root 🀞" phase of innovation - but that kinda undermines the appeal of having my PDS data be... well... mine

Lots of wisdom here

Diff between dev & general audience struck me: "just build things" is an empowered posture with high agency

But the rel between avg users and their apps is much less equitable and (thus) more adversarial

Addressing this will require more subsidiarity (blue, euro, black, etc)

πŸ’― agree - warfighting informs and accelerates tech dev (and has for millennia)

But tech ISN'T magic. Where it gives us power, it does so because it's connected to and bound by something real about our world

Faced with this reality, we can choose to abuse - or redeem - the power it grants us

US mil doctrine (was) "mission command": subordinate autonomy and intent-based leadership

Automation reduces losses, and fighting well means incorporating new tech

Blaming new tech for bad (or nonexistent) policy is scapegoating

We should hold leaders accountable for their decisions instead

Good convo in this thread

Incremental tech can ride the language of the stuff it replaces

Novel tech, though, must balance "being familiar enough to feel inviting" with UX that actively highlights differentiating capabilities

... particularly in domains like Trust & Safety 😬

I’m writing a little piece about how the PDS could evolve into a full online identity - would love to hear your thoughts

I hear people speak of war, in frustration or disgust, as a disembodied force that "happens" to humanity

It is not

It is the name for the last bastion of agency that humans seize when all others are stripped away

Implication: you prevent war by supporting, not eliminating, the agency of others

I wish I'd thought of this first.

"Quos Deus vult perdere, prius dementat", the summation of Tolstoy's analysis of Napoleon, keeps coming to mind

Over time, I've come to view this as a chicken/egg thing

Once someone (anyone) perceives they have the power to shape history... it breaks them; we can't contextualize the role of our volition at that scale

It follows that the humane thing is to prevent individuals from amassing that kind of power

This whole thread is a compelling read. This ecosystem generates so much amazing value, but so much precarity too ("For You" 🀞). The tech is working better every day; there remains a market mechanics challenge to solve.

Hey friends - really looking forward to testing this out. Any chance the permission scope can be reduced to popfeed lexicon data? That's the only thing stopping me from getting going πŸ‘

Thanks for sharing these. Finally had a chance to sit & reflect. Reading through "Against the dark forest" now πŸ‘

FWIW, I'm interested in how the atproto's primitives can shift the dynamic and create a "bright forest" - a semi-public place naturally resistant to predation and externalized risk

Protocols are Schelling points. Ethos and joy and collabing with other humans are orthogonal but important.

Practical Decentralization The point of decentralization is to guarantee the rights of individuals and communities on the Internet. Pulling that off is a balancing act between practicality and ideology.

New blogpost about atproto

It's not federation, it's not a p2p mesh. It's a secret third thing: practical.

I only understand half of what osprey is, and it's one of the most impressive things I've seen recently.

I truly think this is a game changer for moderating content on the atmosphere and is such an amazing thing to have open sourced

@discord.com open sourced their internal T&S rules engine with @roost.tools!

Osprey handles ~400 million actions per day in production at Discord. If you run a Discord-sized (or smaller!) platform, you can just… use their rules engine because it’s open source.

Liturgy in the old religions recognized that repetition, not reason, determined (most of) our perspective

Marketers know this too, and the largest companies use repetition to shape our desires

Which is why control of the feed is so critical: it's where we get to reason about what we should desire

That's the composite quality that I'm learning about πŸ‘

But I'd probably refine slightly: while misunderstanding the self does indeed foster much pain, the solution is - in keeping with our dependent & composite nature - to focus on ourselves less

...which is Lewis' def of humility. Huh.
