No rabbits, no top hats β just #GilliamFellow Axel Vera leveling up on the standard poster session with a little sleight of hand. We guarantee you've never heard an anti-CRISPR (used to help control & improve precision gene editing) explainer like this before, & it's ... magic πͺ.

(6/n) Any cell change that changes chromosome compaction (e.g. mitosis, differentiation, mechanical, osmotic) would be expected to result in stronger A/B/micro-compartments without strongly affecting loop extrusion.
E.g. 2-fold compaction --> 6-fold MC dot change

Itβs time we start thinking of new solutions because the things that βhave always beenβ, donβt fit in with your message of being in βunprecedentedβ times. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented solutions.
Weβre ready to rebuild whatβs been broken. Stop making decisions for us - work WITH us. Some of us will scream and shout. Some of us will want private conversations.
If you donβt think weβre ready, HELP us get to where we need to go. The world is a lot different from when you were in our shoes, and just like how science can evolve, the world shifts too.
When the current and older generations ask us for what we need, we need your resources to get us where we need to go. We ARE ready to lead, we ARE ready to work with you.
As a senior graduate student set to defend in a month, I can tell you right now: Iβve been traveling across the country, and the next generation of scientific leaders, policy experts, communicators, writers, and editors are ready.
My big takeaway is now weβre in a time of questioning what βhas beenβ and in a time of wondering βwhat can this become.β
he last couple of weeks Iβve been at HHMI, AAAS, Occidental, and UCLA. Iβve been traveling all over the country for postdoc interviews, conference talks, panels, and meet and greets. Meeting with mentors and past and present. Meeting with my peers and colleagues.
Keep watching for a wiffle ball bomb π
Before I moved to Carolina 5-6 years ago, I gave all my college baseball stuff (I played D3 at Occidental) to my then-9yo neighbor. Now, heβs using all my old stuff!
Ran into him and his friends playing wiffle ball and joined in π

Does that mean weβd have to convince Andrew to play an instrument as well?

βBecause itβs always been done that wayβ should never stand in the way of imagining and building a new system that aligns better with our core values.
Sometimes the hard and even the nearly impossible possible is worth it to create the future we envision.

BREAKING: The Department of Education has ended its directive that attempted to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in schools nationwide.
This is a victory for academic freedom and education equity.
Brown woman in red coat gestures to a book on the shelf of a bookstore
Today is my book's first birthday! One year ago, Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins: Lessons on Belonging from Our DNA launched, and it never gets old seeing it on the shelf at the store or the library (see MIT Press Bookstore below - signed copy available). 1/8
Aaliyah Staples-West, a second year PhD student in our lab, had the opportunity to share her exciting new work with the @hhmi-science.bsky.social community this week.
Was really fun and meaningful for me to have her join the meeting. (Thx HHMI & ASW).
Go Aaliyah!

My undergrad research experience at @boisestate.bsky.social was pivotal for getting where I am today, and more people need access to it!
Very excited to share my postdoc research in the @jesserdixon.bsky.social lab at @salkinstitute.bsky.social, out online at @natgenet.nature.com today! www.nature.com/articles/s41... We investigated the function of the cohesin accessory protein NIPBL, making two particularly interesting findings:
