A big draw of the game-design-by-A/B-testing type thinking is that it absolves you from having to form your own opinions & taste. It allows you to outsource the most difficult part of any creative endeavour: actually believing in your vision.

A friend of mine who runs these things always repeats something to me along the lines of "Playtests and Research isn't for telling you the right thing to do, it's to confirm to you that your assumptions are correct and that your intentions are getting through to the players" and that's stuck with me
Very grateful the The #Game Narrative Kaleidoscope is an affordable ยฃ14.99
It's been tough justifying paying for other game-related books that are close to โฌ100 a pop when you're unemployed!
Can't wait to get it into my hands. Well done everyone involved!

Megastructure parkour games focused on vertical traversal, speed-climbing, and precision platforming through monolithic architecture. Filter by the aesthetics of brutalism, industrial, frutigo aero, and liminal.
I think this is one of the most disquieting things I've ever seen: Jmail, a Gmail-like implementation of Jeffrey Epstein's mailbox.

short update: been hard at work & busy with life. Still can't really bring myself to play for joy or to engage with the scene, all my leftover energy is spent with people in real life. Will move soon & be more isolated there, wondering what that will do for the work. As always, planning some essays.
rly appreciating the new version of audacity (first time using it in a long time tho). Cool to see software becoming more how i need it to be while also remaining free :)
wow yeah this is really cool stuff!
play & imagination... hmmm...
i don't have anything i've been thinking about for a while in regards to that, my gut says that since play is a constructed layer we like to put between us and reality it heavily relates to imagination/creation/change?
do you have some thoughts on this?
I am not doubting the pleseant abstraction of video games. There's a lot of comfort & information in true causality between action and outcome.
But clear rules can be passed on and compiled much easier than play that redefines itself on the go.
The computer is to games as the camera is to acting.
regarding the earliest recorded games: i believe that there is a huge lack of sources for games that are not easy to record, that are more private, more immediate, less formalised. Chess is a few rules that repeat, but what is the official name of not stepping on cracks in pavement?
7 || YES, Erikโitโs exactly like that movieโฆ
basically, i don't agree with the idea that games are like computers. i am comfortable with a pretty wide idea of games, including a lot of things where you make the rules and conditions of play up yourself and computers are really bad at doing that, so that's why I guess :)
i am talking about the video game as a static artifact. Of course, it appears nonstatic. It can change into infinte permutations of itself, but it can never get outside of the boundaries of the systems that create the permutations.
you can only run programs that the operating system recognises
isnt that a really good way to describe AAA?
the computer protects the rules of the computer game from being changed during play, but games can totally withstand rule-changes during play. So games are really not like computers at all imo
a game is made of interactions. a computer game is made of interactions with a computer.

i sometimes think about the "Dataists" that are in that game. Can't really remember what I wrote for them, but I like to think that I called some things about the AI people back then. Should probably play my own game again at some point ^^
