In case anyone is confused: we now have the handle @monotropism.org to match our website monotropism.org.
The old username should still redirect smoothly! Hopefully.
The final chapter of this book is titled 'Monotropism, Enhanced Perceptual Functioning and Asymmetrical Bifurcation'.
"Monotropism helps explain why autistic strengths often emerge in interest-driven, autonomous contexts and diminish in environments that demand rapid task-switching or divided attention. This per- spective aligns closely with both neurodiversity and strength-based approaches.."

“Lining things up is fun because it’s pleasurable. It’s odd that [non-autistic people] don’t understand it. Sorting/organising is one of the deepest pleasures in life, as intense/as sought after as delicious food.”

Blue and gold graphic titled “Research Reshare” with the Thriving Autistic infinity logo. Title reads: “Transitioning In And Out Of Autistic Flow (Wain et al., 2026).” Quote states that autistic flow theory offers opportunities for interventions that promote autistic thriving and support psychotherapeutic approaches that embrace autistic ways of being. Full academic citation appears in small text at the bottom.
Blue and gold slide titled “Research Reshare” with the Thriving Autistic logo. Heading: “Transitioning In And Out Of Autistic Flow (Wain et al., 2026).” Subheading: “Three Themes.” Bullet points explain that (1) flow supports autistic wellbeing and regulation, (2) monotropic attention, sensory sensitivity and repetitive behaviours can intensify experiences of flow and non-flow, and (3) predictability supports feeling safe enough to enter flow. Academic citation shown at bottom.

Find out about the history of monotropism.
Dinah Murray presented ‘Attention Tunnelling and Autism‘ at the Durham autism conference in 1992. This was the first ever publication about monotropism.

We’re published in “It Takes All Kinds of Minds: Fostering Neurodivergent Thriving at School”.
Stimpunks Co-Creative Director Helen, @autisticrealms.bsky.social, has a chapter in “It Takes All Kinds of Minds” on “Embracing Monotropism and Flow”.

"Recognising that distressed behaviour is often not the child, but the pressure to conform, allows us to move from ‘fixing’ to ‘facilitating’ belonging."

I had one of my poems, Far From Equilibrium, published in @internationaltimes.bsky.social; it seemed a fitting home for it, since it was inspired by Mike Lesser, its former editor (also my one-time mentor & one of the co-developers of the theory of Monotropism).

Came across this article about monotropic spiral on the @stimpunks.org site and all I can say is that this feels like what's happening to me combined with active CPTSD symptoms and general burnout.
Promotional graphic for the book It Takes All Kinds of Minds: Fostering Neurodivergent Thriving at School. On the left is the colourful geometric book cover, edited by Rachael Davis, Claire O’Neill, and Sue Fletcher-Watson (Speechmark). On the right, text reads “Published December 2025” and highlights a chapter titled Embracing Monotropism and Flow by Fergus Murray and Helen Edgar, alongside a contents excerpt showing chapter sections. Along the bottom are three black-and-white illustrated pages labelled “Environments,” “Practice & Pedagogy,” and “Relationships,” credited to illustrator Sonny Hallett.

"The theory of monotropism frames the difference in cognitive functioning between autistic and non-autistic people in a value-neutral way. However, the broader autism literature has traditionally described focused interests in a negative light"
@aimeespeaks.bsky.social & Sarah Dantas, Neurodiversity
This is fabulous! Thank you for sharing!
"Creating spaces where autistic people can express their authentic selves and be valued can greatly improve their wellbeing....neurodiversity- affirming practice can encourage more inclusive research and revitalise clinical and therapeutic practice".
'Neurodiversity-affirming autism assessment and support: a scoping review' includes monotropism in its table of important neurodiversity-affirming theoretical concepts, along with the social model of disability, double empathy, stimming, stigma and camouflaging.
