Haven't had time to check out all the new demos from NEXT Fest, but I took a look at CICADAMATA and WOWZERS the demo was so good!!!
We have been blessed with so many good indie games these past couple of years and this one deserves your attention, too!

Age verification vendor Persona left frontend exposed, researchers say
Behind a basic age check, researchers say Personaβs system runs extensive identity, watchlist, and adverse-media screening.
Researchers discovered a publicly exposed frontend on a government-authorized server, containing 2,456 accessible files from the age verification vendor used by Discord.

i've always kind of disliked how high level most graphics abstractions are, so it's really nice to build something that's more like a convenience layer - simplifies managing graphics state, but that's it - you still have full control over your bufffers, shaders, memory use, etc.

so fun fact, slang doesn't *strictly* support opengl-flavour GLSL, so I now have an extra layer where i take slang spirv and pass it through spirv-cross to remap bindings and generate opengl compatible glsl lol
honestly been really fun writing a full on graphics library though!

hey! do you like fun music with cool visuals?
this is a release organized by some of my friends, featuring a bunch of fun shaders, including a few by me that I am incredibly proud of :3
if that sounds good, come by and hang out!

I'm sure it feels way more productive! But (at least on average) the actual work output doesn't go up - otherwise we'd have seen a massive increase in stuff being made and released, which just... hasn't happened.
You could always try measuring it yourself to see; that's what the article author did!

There's a ton of good reasons to dislike the current state of AI (environmental/ethical/security concerns etc), but the other thing is that the actual data just... doesn't show any productivity improvements.

The Slang Shading Language
Empowering real-time graphics developers with advanced language features and machine learning capabilities.
slang is pretty cool (shader-slang.org), it's essentially haxe but for shader code - a modern high level language that cross compiles into basically any backend you want.
dealing with api memory layout differences and such is still quite challenging though, i got stuck on that for a while

stardraw is now able to fully setup and render a basic triangle with a slang shader!
there's still some work to be done on passing uniform/ssbo data to shaders but i know roughly what i'm doing for that so i don't think it'll take too long

This is not Minecraft
YouTube video by Ethan Gore
It's a little better than it used to be, but still pretty bad for a voxel engine! (specifically java edition here) It has no lods, no mesh combining, and only barebones culling.
compare to something like

although i'm assuming you're referring to java edition, bedrock/'windows' edition is a bit more performant at the cost of being very buggy and a generally worse experience

'how well minecraft runs'? are we talking with optimization mods here or no, because minecraft's vanilla performance is notoriously bad for how simplistic the graphics are.

this is such a problem with people wanting to get into gamedev in general tbh
it's like, dude, the people who already have the skills wanna get paid to use them or work on their own ideas, nobody wants to work on somebody else's ideas for free
not sure why so many people don't seem to realize that

there's also cases like in C++ where a lot features and functionality is kept in the language for legacy purposes, but isn't recommended to be used anymore, so gets linted against. (or sometimes the reverse, linting against modern features in order to remain compatible with legacy systems)

my girlfriend just made the point that linting tends to be a lot more annoying than useful when it doesn't come with automatic fixes - which tbh is something I'm definitely spoiled with, since almost all lints in jetbrains IDEs have 'quick fixes' that actually do some cool AST manipulation for you

I think a lot of linting tends to be very overzeleous because the expectation is that different projects want/need different things linted and you'll enable/disable the linting you specifically find useful
