I believe that the "rate" paid outside the GTA in many municipalities is higher, but maybe the difference is the property values in Toronto are much higher. So they may have paid a higher $ figure when in Toronto, even if they're paying a lower $ figure with a higher rate/% wherever they live now

A few things I will remember John Tory for:

Violent, militarized encampment evictions.

Undermining local democracy by requesting 'Strong Mayor' powers from Doug Ford.

The failure of SmartTrack and the closure of the Scarborough LRT.

Denying shelter to refugees.

Some news! Mayor Chow is calling for a review of the Committee of Adjustment process, looking at ways to streamline things.

"Some recent CoA hearings and decisions have raised questions from stakeholders on how the CoA applies Council-approved policies," she says.

And since then they’ve not only bid for US rights, they’ve made an F1 movie that was massive and they’ve included F1 TV Pro in the Apple TV subscription for no extra fee. Things have clearly changed. Obviously there’s a limit to what they’ll pay, as there would be with anyone else too.

That’s why I said when those rights are up for renewal. Nothing will change in any market until then.

I assume the'll buy up the rights in every market when those renewals take place. Hope Canada is soon!

How much has John Tory cost Toronto? Something his opponents could challenge him with. Start with the cost of rerunning the mayoral election in 2023. I've talked to some conservatives who are incensed about that cost and want him to pay it back himself if he runs.

SmartTrack was always a grift. It's not the cost spent for nothing, but the lost time for other plans that hurts most.

With rumours of John Tory announcing his bid to return to the Mayor's office as early as this week, we need to grill him constantly over SmartTrack! $97 million has been spent on the King-Liberty & Finch-Kennedy stations which may never get built! #shame #TTC #TOpoli www.thestar.com/news/gta/met...

Just a reminder that a bar is a safe consumption site and alcohol caused 17,000 deaths in Canada in 2020. The Ford government closed down the supervised consumption site in my neighbourhood. No matter what the substance, regulated and observed is safer than illicit and alone.

Very, VERY Doug Ford’s Toronto to ensure that the bars will be open for an 8 AM hockey game but not the TTC. Get as drunk as you like but you gotta drive there first.

Is it normal, in a Canadian city, for the police to beat and tear gas hundreds of people for more than an hour, injuring six, to protect a company providing guards to concentration camps, and for it not to be in any major local or national news media the next day? Asking for a friend.

Palestine Action have WON their judicial review in the High Court!
A massive victory for free speech, freedom of association and the right to protest.
A massive defeat for the draconian attempts by Keir Starmer's government to curtail our fundamental rights.

At this point it seems no one understands reserve funds. They are majority unspent capital budget from previous years, not rainy day funds. Spending down the reserves is good.

AI-generated ads dropped the ball at this year’s Super Bowl This year’s Super Bowl ads were a testament to how sloppy gen AI still is.

The low quality feels like the point here, since the plausible goal with all of it is to denigrate the whole idea of craft and creativity and push people to accept less

It’s taken years for the city to close a tiny gap in this 65-km public trail. The trouble? A 110-year-old private golf course lies in the way Toronto has finally decided to expropriate part of the Weston Golf and Country Club, a private course that has been open since 1915.

Thanks @alyshah.bsky.social for calling out the Weston Golf & Country Club's resistance to the Mid-Humber Gap. One golf course has no right to veto 1000s of residents & trail users who want this trail which is also a key part of the Loop Trail. #BikeTO #WalkTO #TOpoli www.thestar.com/news/gta/it-...

This is one of my favorite optical illusions, because even when you know specifically HOW IT WORKS, it's still hard to make your brain believe it.

The image below is real-world video, but you're being tricked into believing it's an elaborate miniature by the DIORAMA EFFECT.

Let's talk about it.
