AMS Responds to NSF Regarding the Future of National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)
YouTube video by American Meteorological Society
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a cornerstone of U.S. weather science. AMS urges a transparent, community-driven review before restructuring such critical infrastructure.

AGU submitted a response to the NSF regarding the proposed restructuring of NCAR.
For more than 60 years, NCAR has been a cornerstone of weather prediction, Earth system science and scientific training. We urge NSF to pursue transparent consultation and evidence-based reform.

LLMs are basically over-confident entry-level programmers. Perfect time to upskill your way further along the technical track.

May 25, 2017 Tornado
Live storm chasing video and photography with James Hammett. Breaking severe weather with tornadoes, hail, and lightning.
The day didnβt stop there: I got absolutely rocked by 70+ mph winds in Grainfield, KS, and managed to drive through a developing circulation in Oakley. Full chase log ‡οΈ

Everyone remembers Wray, but for a few the magic started in Eckley. May 7, 2016 I blasted east, betting on a #supercell cluster erupting near the state border. Just as I arrived this scene unfolded β a ghostly #tornado touching down north of Eckley, #Colorado πͺοΈ Full chase log link in π§΅

Better than hiding use of ChatGPT but to me it implies that there was no attempt made at verifying accuracy. And for now LLMs are still excellent at being confidently wrong. At least with most Wikipedia articles there are humans constantly trying to fact check each other.

NSF Intent to Restructure Critical Weather Infrastructure
The US NSF has put out a "dear colleagues" letter that is essentially a yard sale list for @ncar-ucar.bsky.social
It asks questions such as, who'd like to take over some of NCAR's programs? Is anyone interested in commercial use of the Mesa Lab?
If you have thoughts, send them to NSF_NCAR@nsf.gov

Guess it depends on how many exterior cameras you have. I have to back up just enough to disrupt flow before I can see whether the way is clear

I'm not usually a backer-in but... Aren't you just doing the hard part / flow disruption before rather than after? And in doing so you just had the opportunity to assess the entire environment when backing in rather than after when you only have a tunnel-width view at best?

Flashback: May 17, 2019 I was chasing this monster #supercell near McCook #Nebraska. After a white-knuckle detour through a torrential rain core, I broke out just in time to intercept this EF-1 #tornado near Farnam.
