To be Indigenous is less about being *born* Indigenous than it is about what we do w/ that honor. Crazy Horse was murdered while fighting arrest. Geronimo wouldnโt submit when threats were imminent. Being Native isnโt about simply claiming it, itโs about living up to the principles & never wavering.
For decades, Rev. Jesse Jackson stood with Indigenous peoples and our fight against injustice. He visited the Oceti Sakowin camp on the Standing Rock rez in 2016 as we fought against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Rest in power, sir.

And, in Ojibway, we also donโt have a word for โgoodbyeโ. Instead, we say Baamaapii (Bah-mah-pee). It means โuntil later,โ or โI will see you again.โ Our language carries the understanding that relationships are never truly ended โeven after death, we will see each other in this life or the next.

An Indigenous perspective:
Democratic socialism has been here for thousands of years โ everyone had a say, everyone had a vote, families didnโt starve, no one was homeless, children didnโt go hungry.
Caring for people wasnโt a hard math.
Who was in charge of Japanese internment? The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Why? B/c many Indian reservations were first established as prison camps. My rez is Prison Camp 334. Google โPoston.โ On the Navajo Nation, this was an internment camp within an internment camp. Weโve been here before.
