Tomorrow, my Augsburg colleagues and I will present our own work on temporal dynamics and linguistic patterns in discourse modes with a specific focus on narrative passages.

I'm very excited for a few days of genre/register fun at AG 9 of #DGfS2026 in Trier. Today, it's time to absorb and process theoretical and applied approaches and studies looking at examples from a lovely set of languages (🇸🇪🇩🇪🇬🇧🇫🇷) and text types (such as transcribed life stories).
Title slide of Hanna's presentation that reads "A Case Study on Annotating and Analysing Situation Entity Types in Reddit Discussions on Democracy" and the author names: Hanna Schmück, Michael Reder, Katrin Paula, Annemarie Friedrich.
After a lovely lunch and poster session, the afternoon continued with our own talk and a presentation by Andreas Blombach, Philipp Heinrich, and colleagues from @fau.de on drivel in German telegram posts. A very interesting approach to manual annotation of complex and challenging data!

A great start to the #CMC-Corpora conference in beautiful Bayreuth. Lovely warm-up dinner last night and really strong start this morning with presentations on Emotion and Hope Speech and a corpus study on Albanian computer mediated communication (which I knew far too little about thus far!)

I'd like to think that critical thinking and human-centered, nuanced evaluation is a major strength us linguists generally have (be that when using AI or traditional methods/frameworks). Hopefully this Element contains a little bit of that.

Also: What is tagged as "electric blue"⚡🔷 and what, if anything, does that tell us? - by pure coincidence this could be a valid tag for the Element cover. Working on this I got the chance to experiment and write about how we might want to go forward as a discipline in evaluating tools.

Element alert! I've had the pleasure of working with @paulari.bsky.social and Yufang Qian on evaluating automatic image tagging for multimodal corpora. It was a pleasure to collaborate and identify the associated challenges, e.g. What is an accurate newspaper image tag? What is a relevant one?

Professor Lorna M. Hughes on stage presenting the findings of the Our Heritage Our Stories project
Great opening keynote from Prof Lorna M. Hughes on Community Generated Digital Content & lessons learnt from the #TaNC Our Heritage Our Stories project ohos.ac.uk #CGDC #OHOS
Thanks, Claire! ☺️
Thanks, Paul! It's a great team and a fantastic project, and since it (sadly) is not a long-term project I have (luckily) been able to continue living in Lancaster for now, so I'll still be around for a good few months.
Thank you!

The theme is new beginnings: A new platform & followers, a new job as Research Associate at Glasgow, and a great start to the day at the TaNC conference in MCR. It's been wonderful working on the Our Heritage, Our Stories project so far - and some of my visualisation work even made it on the slides.
