The rest of the route is a parade of Swiss lakes and mountains, but why not linger a while in Lausanne, Vevey or Montreux, and take one of the steamers across the lake as the flowers come into bloom even as the snow clings to the upper reaches of the mountains.
A journey along the shore of Lake Geneva perhaps? Travel route 43 from Geneva and you’ll start with a very pleasant stretch along the water, passing through Lausanne and the Lavaux vineyards on the way to Montreux...

You can do a day trip on the Jungraujoch excursion as a side quest to our Route 43 in Europe by Rail, but be warned: it is mightily expensive. As for Route 43, this is a long grand tour through Swiss lakes and mountains - Switzerland as you always imagined it.

Route 50 in our book takes us from the Danube to Adriatic, a journey from Budapest via the shores of Lake Balaton to Zagreb and on to Split, where we then catch a ferry across the water to Ancona.

The round trip from Carlisle down to Settle and back will take four to five hours depending on how long you spend in Settle, and we rate it as a must-do trip. The Pennine landscapes are absolutely gorgeous.

There is plenty of mountain scenery on Route 39, a journey which starts in Zurich before following the Arlberg railway between Feldkirch and Innsbruck in Austria. After Kitzbühel, the route continues east towards Salzburg, Linz and Vienna.
