A Swiss train on the Bernina route arrives from across the border into Tirano, where the railway actually threads its way through the streets of the Italian town. You can experience it for yourself if you follow Route 40 from our book.

The rest of the route is a parade of Swiss lakes and mountains, but why not linger a while in Lausanne, Vevey or Montreux, and take one of the steamers across the lake as the flowers come into bloom even as the snow clings to the upper reaches of the mountains.

You can do a day trip on the Jungraujoch excursion as a side quest to our Route 43 in Europe by Rail, but be warned: it is mightily expensive. As for Route 43, this is a long grand tour through Swiss lakes and mountains - Switzerland as you always imagined it.

The Jungfraubahn, seen here in the shadow of the mighty Eiger, carries passengers up through the mountain to Europe’s highest railway station at Jungfraujoch, loftily perched at 3,454 metres above sea level, and only 700 metres shy of the Jungfraujoch summit.
