This #BlackHistoryMonth, Boston Parks and Recreation is honoring Black Bostonians whose legacies live on in our parks. Today, we’re celebrating Phillis Wheatley, an enslaved woman who would go on to become the first published African American, and an internationally celebrated poet.
February 1 begins Black History Month — and in 2026, we mark 100 years since Carter G. Woodson launched the first Black History celebration in 1926.
This year’s theme, A Century of Black History Commemorations, honors the past and challenges us to shape the next 100 years.
