How Congress can restore the independence of US science
Members must go beyond reinstating US government research spending and re-establish decentralized governance at the National Institutes of Health and other agencies.
The most impt change at #NIH and to US science this year is bigger than grant cancellationsβ itβs how the agency is governed.
For 75 years NIH has been largely independent of presidential control. Thatβs changed this year. New piece from me and @nataliebaviles.bsky.social in @nature.com

My quote of the day
Right now, when we're hearing so much disturbing and hateful rhetoric, it is so important to remember that our diversity has been - and will always be - our greatest source of strength and pride here in the United States.

random question for people with more experience with coding agents than I have: does it make sense to give an agent its own non-admin user account on your system, then give it full privileges? Isn't that easier than dealing with setting all the permissions?

It is true that if your goal is to maximize the number of clicks on a given piece of content, you don't want to produce a 3,000-word piece. But maybe not everyone should be trying to maximize clicks! Maybe it's okay to target a smaller, more devoted audience. Indeed I've bet my entire career on it.

If you could do a sabbatical in any lab to recharge your energy and get excited again about a totally different field in biology (different from what you are studying), where would you go?

I've made a fair amount of Roman style pizza di patate, and I am a big fan. Takes some work to get the cook right (precook the spuds), but it opens up the pizza to all different combinations of elements that taste great with potatoes! This one has crispy bacon in the mix - rosemary can be a delight.

It's super geeky - you get graphs & estimated time of completion. I've used it in a handful of recipes so far - I stinking love the versatility & precision as well as ability to hit things right the first time. Brisket done well without second guessing. Food safety in chicken without drying out.

Used Typhur temperature probes successfully again tonight (holiday gift). Roasted a dry brined chicken, one probe in the thigh, set to 165, rose to 175 during carryover. The other inserted in the breast, set to 150, rose to 157 during carryover. Convection @ 425, took 55 minutes. π#scientistswhocook
