Correction, intense bomb cyclones like the one we just had are rare, but the meteorological phenomenon is quite common across North America.

There are a lot of people saying the term "bomb cyclone" is alarmist and silly. That this is just another Winter storm.

They are actually quite rare, and so the terminology that has been used by scientists since the 50s is being used more publicly now.
