Why Iβm heading off to Winnipeg for my first political convention in 31 years
Avi Lewis is the leader the NDP needs now
When people of differing views can all find a home in the NDP & hear their views articulated by various leaders, the tent grows. Conversely, when people who hold views that diverge from the leader are told to bite their tongues, they leave.

Incredible commentary from this Swiss announcer, who accurately characterizes the Israeli team as "Self-defined zionist to the core...who posted several messages in favour of the genocide in Gaza...calling it βthe most morally just war in history.ββ
Solidarity to a real one.

A post i made back in August, reply to someone, occasionally gets liked (up to 80). But the likes comes in waves--10 in the last 24 hours, after months of no activity. Is that just a like refreshing the post in other's feed? Seems odd.

Defend workersβ rights. Introduce a bill of rights for gig workers to guarantee labour protections, collective bargaining rights, and fair wages. Build a 21st-Century Copyright Charter to guarantee fair compensation, enforce workersβ rights, and modernize licensing. Rein in digital surveillance in the workplace. Require AI transparency and consent from all Canadian companies.
Workers in the gig economy face precarious working conditions, low pay, and no protections.
Meanwhile, trillion-dollar tech corporations are profiting off artists, journalists, musicians, writers, and filmmakers β while paying little or nothing.
We need a new vision for the digital economy.

Text on green background: "Dignified Work in a Digital Age." Below, a logo reads "Lewis for Leader".
The NDP must be a political home for every worker β white collar, blue collar, or no collar.
That means defending workersβ rights that have been under attack for decades while confronting new threats posed by app-based gig work, AI, and precarious jobs.

Do Canadian MPs actually connect with the public on X?
I looked at RTs and views for every tweet* sent by Liberal MPs yesterday
Out of 46 tweets, 21 Liberal MPs racked up a combined 475 retweets
34% had zero RTs. Only 17% got more than 10 RTs
3 tweets accounted for over half of all engagement

In Scientific Publishing, Who Should Foot the Bill?
Publishers often charge authors to publish their publicly-funded research. Will a federal crackdown make a difference?
Happy to be quoted in this overview looking at the complex problem of who pays for scientific #publishing.

Ottawa hands corporate leaders 50 roles in government
Ottawa plans to embed the private sector workers after adopting a business group's proposal β even naming the program after them, a briefing note reveals.
1/ The Carney government has fallen hard for AI hype, and it's endangering us all.
This unprecedented invitation of data-hungry tech execs inside our house (where all our confidential data is stored) is a disturbing betrayal of public trust.

Infographic titled βThe Drain of Scientific Publishing,β describing four problems in scholarly publishing: Money, Time, Trust, and Control.
Money: Illustration of flying dollar bills and buildings beside a bank. Text explains that for-profit publishers charge unreasonable reading and publishing fees disconnected from production costs, noting that Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, and Taylor & Francis made $US 12 billion profit from 2019β2024.
Time: Illustration of a stressed researcher surrounded by stacks of papers and a clock. Text states researchers spend enormous time as authors, reviewers, and editors, maintaining a system that prioritizes quantity over quality, causing burnout and reduced rigor.
Trust: Illustration of a magnifying glass over retracted papers. Text describes commercial pressures to publish quickly, enabling low-quality and fraudulent papers, eroding public confidence.
Control: Illustration of a person with medals labeled with journal metrics. Text explains that rankings like journal impact factor and h-index dictate success, with infrastructures biased toward English journals and controlled by for-profit companies.
At the bottom, a stop-sign graphic reads βStop the Drain.β Additional text calls for altering incentives and ownership of publishing, re-communalizing scholarly publishing, building community-led systems, preventing unreasonable profits, and using existing open models and infrastructures (e.g., preprints, diamond journals, OJS, SciELO). A final statement urges aligning research assessment with open, community-led publishing.
π£ Our friends at the #ScholCommLab have published a preprint, "The Drain of #ScientificPublishing", and are calling for #research communities, funders, governments, and #universities to "re-communalise publishing to serve #science not the market"
