My new favorite rebuttal to tired citations that women are "in general" and "consistently" less competitive and less willing to take risks. Also some seriously fabulous research work.
There is no ethical way to become or remain a billionaire.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk,
Way to freaking go Europe!!!!

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.
It's hilarious to me how much white Dems are like "Yes ICE is terrible. Yes cops do exactly the same things as ICE, at 10x to 100x the scale, but they target Black people, so that's OK! We have to be careful what arguments we make about ICE, or we will immediately have to reckon with the police."
This fundraiser was so successful that Iβm doing another one! The extra funds that were set for the first family went towards the second familyβs total rent need. Letβs keep it going!
(repeating a question asked repeatedly over the years)
Partner: Why did we ever abandon Disco?
(context: Disco is the most hilariously upbeat and happy music genre)
(for the first time offering a real answer)
Me: Because we realized, eventually, that the timeline we were on didn't _deserve_ Disco.
I know lots of folks are sending free whistles where they are needed. But if I am happy to buy some and help fund those and related efforts, any recommendations for where to buy them?
I get tired of saying it, but Iβll say it again: the nature of oppression in America is that they workshop it first on Black, Latino, Asian & Native people.
But it is always, in the end, coming for everyone.
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the six million Jewish people murdered by the Nazis, as well as countless other victims.
We honor their lives by rejecting the evils of antisemitism, dehumanization, and authoritarian violence wherever they appear.
Never again means never again for anyone.
my grandmother, an Auschwitz survivor, was Anne Frankβs neighbor in Amsterdam, and Oma thinks this comparison is perfectly apt
DAILY MEMO: ICE Continues to Use CHP and Local Police Resources Despite California's Sanctuary State Policy
Around 40 people were kidnapped from Santa Paula to Riverside, with more than half from the City of L.A. in the last three days.

If you want to know where Silicon Valley is at these days, this story doesn't mention that one reason the pro-murder VC in this story works at this fund because he was fired for sexual harassment from his prior job at Square.
Another thing you can just do -- go into the replies, and donate to one of the families. Or all of them.
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call βsymbolic compliance.β
Thatβs when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
Almost every reason people have for defunding or abolishing ICE is also a reason to defund or abolish the police, yet many people who are rightly calling for action against ICE would never come close to doing to the same for police. But this fight goes beyond just ICE. ICE represents a larger issue.
When you help make it so the only names people know are Pretti and Good, you reinforce the culture that says these things aren't "bad enough" until white people get involved. This has been going on for a whole year. Many non-white people have died in this same way trying to protect their neighbors.
Somewhere in the US != MN, relatively safe, financially stable, especially if you're white, and wondering what you can actually do to help?
Can seem daunting (did to me)...

Scroll down, randomly pick 5 things and donate what you can. Now you've done something.
I mean, read all the posts pointing out the women's work that has _always_ kept things going for these dudes (and myself and other dudes!)...
But also, bankrolling you say? Why yes, we (those of us not in MN and currently safe) _can_ bankroll this thing!!!!

This isn't saying that there aren't problems with hostile training (ignoring consent, robots.txt, etc), and problems with the fundamental impact on creative professions. Both of those are real problems. We just can't solve them through expanded copyright protections (my personal opinion, IANAL).
It could threaten long-standing practices in machine learning and text-and-data mining that underpin research in science, medicine, and technology.

Attacking AI training on copyright grounds misunderstands whatβs at stake. If copyright law is expanded to require permission for analyzing or learning from existing works, the damage wonβt be limited to generative AI tools.
I have a mixed relationship with the EFF these days, but this article about AI training and copyright I think is a really good, approachable lens into a lot of my feelings about the intersection of those two things:

I am so stoked about this talk and this conference. Check out the whole thread from Kate to see the _amazing_ other speakers lined up.
TBH, if this works, de-escalates the Venezuela situation, and gets them a non-oppressive government, etc... The should absolutely give her *another* nobel peace prize. Would be the perfect nose-thumbing of the whole damn thing.
To quote some of the music of my times:
SOME OF THOSE THAT WORK FORCES ARE THE SAME THAT BURN CROSSES.
This open murder of an unarmed citizen is shocking even though it was always going to happen. It was an inevitability, and there have been plenty of voices saying so for the past two years. Every editorial decision to ignore those voices in favor of soft-selling this regime contributed to it

I poked around and found multiple sources confirming Daniel, Mattie Weiss, and this fund raiser are legit. JIC that saves you some stress and let's you feel like you've done at least something small.
