We all love upset plots (the best way to represent set data), but how do we make them accessible to everyone?
To answer this we { @maggiemccracken.bsky.social, @alex-lex.bsky.social, and others } developed a system (and ran a bunch of studies) to figure it out!

Do you use data visualizations π or add annotations to them? My collaborators and I are doing a study on how people use visualizations in their work β we'd love to interview you!

Awesome, thank you so much!
We systematically analyzed the visualizations used in 1,846 subfigures from 45 human single-cell atlas publications in a survey on The State of Single-Cell Atlas Data Visualization in the Biological Literature. π: osf.io/preprints/os... π: keller-mark.github.io/sc-star-site/
I'd like toe be added!
that's bad timing with the EuroVis deadline
That's interesting. Can I also try?
I did not realize there is a domain name phd, nice!
Thank you @jonfroehlich.bsky.social !
Thanks for the list! There are also colleagues doing awesome vis research in our lab! @mkeller7.bsky.social @manzt.sh @huyennguyen.com @dvdkouril.xyz
Love the influx of academics to Bluesky. Will this be our new π ? To help grow the community, I just created an HCI+Accessibility "starter pack". Help me grow the list! Many are missing! go.bsky.app/PZxHNqP
Thank you, @mkeller7.bsky.social!
Adding accessibility tags using Adobe every time I export PDFs from Google Docs is laborious, but it's a good practice for testing and improving PDF accessibility. I'm getting more familiar with VoiceOver shortcuts!
I switched from Outlook to Apple Mail simply because using Alt+Arrow to navigate between words conflicted with the menu focus in Outlook. One feature I miss a lot is Outlook's smart filteringβIt looks like I have to manually set up every filter rule in Apple Mail.
I made a data visualization academics starter pack! go.bsky.app/wzjzNi
Let me know who I should add. #datavis
Important lesson learned today: when writing important academic documents, use Overleaf instead of Google Docs. Arranging figures in Google Docs is such a painful experience π΅βπ«
It looks like a perfect dataset for UpSet plots
Over my 15-year career as a faculty member, I have come up with two surefire ways to Get Sh*t Done: (1) adding something to my calendar ensures that I will attend to it, and (2) adding something to my TODO ensures that I complete it. Pro tip: condition yourself to obeying these two important tools!
Ooh, nice. I can use my personal website domain as the account name in Bluesky
UpSet won the #ieeevis InfoVis 10-year test of time award π. Thanks to @ngehlenborg.bsky.social @henstr.bsky.social Romain Vuillemot, and Hanspeter Pfister for being an awesome team to work with on this. I wrote up my reflections on what made UpSet successful: vdl.sci.utah.edu/blog/2024/10...
Trade-offs of four authoring interfaces, including template-based, shelf configuration, natural language interface, and code editor, in terms of their learnability, expressivity, efficiency, and accuracy, are illustrated with parallel coordinates.
How can we combine multiple visualization interfaces to make a system learnable and expressive?
Our π Honorable Mention paper at #ieeevis introduced a conceptual framework, Blended Interface, and its implementation for genomics data visualization.
