Weird chart. What happened in 2025 in the US? Did political leadership change and then start systematically dismantling education, science, health care, and government, levying arbitrary tariffs, randomly attacking major US cities, and destroying the economy?

Just asking.

I would counter that special equipment is needed to burn off the heavy overcast in Ohio.

Today's Nebraska M4.1 earthquake on Denison's Raspberry Shake. Nice signal from ~1,350 kilometres away.

Too many β€œmiddle ground” AI argumentsβ€”β€œI have concerns, too, but we have to adapt”—proceed from what is to me a peculiar embrace of β€œinevitability” which seems to be magical thinking, a way of depoliticizing the political, of self-soothing in the face of an overwhelming challenge.

It doesn't help that Dr. Beckett and Dr. Fraiser were two of my favourites in their respective series.

I recently had an assignment in my Earth Resources class where I asked if my students were Future Resource Conflict optimists or pessimists. Pessimism won 13-3.

There are a lot of things wrong with the US educational system, but the biggest is that it does buy into "run schools like businesses" in the sense that "making" is more important than "growing".

Faculty grade -- at least many of us -- because we are required to give students grades. If I had it my way, I wouldn't grade students. Instead, I would convey their level of dedication, diligence and sincerity to the learning process. Of course, med schools would hate that.

What I mean here is that education at all levels is accomplished by working, struggling, challenging yourself. If you think the education is about making the end products (essays, tests, etc.), you aren't interested in learning, you are interested in being a customer for a degree.

In Japanese culture, "expertise" is not earned through accomplishment or "innate talent". It is earned by diligence and work -- you might not be "the best", but if you have spent time working on some skill or knowledge, that is how you earn "expertise". AI and its shortcuts do not create expertise.

I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.

Wandering Earth 2. It clocks in at 2:53 and at least the multiple disasters and mistakes have explosions.
