Yeah that’s totally fair. I still use MS Office for work stuff. But I’ve used Libre Office on my personal computers for years.

I’ve used Libre Office for years and definitely recommend it.
I’m also not sure if it’s something that can actually be solved. Some kinds of economic activity naturally coalesce around population density, and I don’t think any government policy can really change that.
There seems to be a big conversation going on in US politics Bsky today about the urban/rural divide, and my one contribution to this discussion is to point out that the urban/rural divide is a pretty consistent feature of politics in the wealthy democracies.
Not going to do a dunk tweet but I love all the AI guys (and they are always guys) who are like, "Oh, you don't think the computer that can't do math is conscious? Prove it by arguing all of philosophy from first principles!"
TO MY MOTHER As I write, four men have admitted to my mother Daphne's assassination. Another four men, who deny wrongdoing and are presumed innocent, are awaiting trial. There will be more cases against more defendants and, at some point, people will lose sight of my mother. This book is to introduce you to her before she is lost again.
Well, fuck.
Most of the talk about OpenAI, Anthropic and “mass surveillance” neglected to mention that widespread scraping of the web is in itself mass surveillance.

Sánchez: “You may have heard that Spain is alone. They’re the same people who said that when we recognized the State of Palestine, and then others followed.
“We are not alone — we are the first. Those who will end up alone are the ones defending the indefensible.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez: “A country that always defends human rights and international law, like Spain, earns the respect of the entire world, as has happened in recent weeks.”

"Torn From the Heavens" is one of the best versions of the crystal theme, IMO
One thing western game developers should learn from Japanese developers is the value of musical themes and motifs that are repeated throughout a series of games. If you hear the crystal theme from Final Fantasy or the treasure chest music from Zelda, it triggers fond memories of earlier games.

Obama’s change in policy towards Cuba and the JCPOA happened, the world didn’t end, everything was fine. Part of manufacturing consent for more war is purposefully forgetting the very recent memory when it was proven to be wholly unnecessary.
Kalshi employees "kind of understand that without the tweets and the streamers and all of the social-media stuff that the traders do for them, usually just for free, their marketing would be a lot harder," said Jack Campion, 20, a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Kalshi affiliate. In September, Kalshi briefly signed up a 15-year-old videogame streamer who goes by vertid online to promote its brand on X as an affiliate. A week later, Kalshi ended the partnership. "Yo brother, legal team confirmed that we can't work with minors rn," a Kalshi employee wrote to the user in messages reviewed by the Journal. "Kinda sad tbh."

The supposed explosion of the federal public service looks less explosive if you put it in per capita numbers and draw a line graph back to the mid-80s.
I love the look of this game. I'm really hoping they stick the landing. It's also nice to see a big publisher taking a swing at something completely new.
Yeah, it is likely true that if you want to get people hooked you need some level of abstraction from pure RNG.
People like to gamble on the results of random number generators. Usually they don’t like to bet on things that are explicitly random number generators; usually it is more appealing if things are dressed up a bit. So people will generate randomness with a shuffled deck of cards, to play blackjack or baccarat or poker, or with a pair of dice, to play craps.
From a recent @matt-levine.bsky.social column. I would argue that many people *do* like to gamble on things that are explicitly random number generators; that is, after all, what a lottery is, and lotteries are one of the most popular forms of gambling.
This is such a weird way to announce a new gaming console.
OK, but . . . why? You can still play the original on modern consoles or PC, and the version you can play right now already looks good and modern. It's not like this is some old Playstation 1 game that you couldn't play on a modern TV because the fonts are unreadable.

•67% of American subjects and 80% of international subjects are undergraduate psychology students. •An American undergraduate is 4,000 times more likely to be a subject in a psychology experiment than a random person outside the West.
I think about this a lot. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/psyc...
