I’d be so curious to see this as a network graph, what games were commonly paired together on lists. I feel Rogue and Nethack are foundational in the Dwarf Fortress and Caves of Qud proc-gen sphere, but also for the modern roguelikes for Spelunky and Slay the Spire.

(Also, Umineko, @xeecee.bsky.social's Misericorde, and Pentiment did push me to make the leap to reading The Name of the Rose, so I might not be the intended audience for "gamers should realize that reading is good")
A thought this made me have just now that I'm gonna poorly articulate is that VNs are closer to watching theater than they are to books. Even without them being voiced, you've got sets, character blocking, and sound all largely presented outside of the written word.

Doing my bit of wildlife photography, I just have no idea what the motivation is? Bird photography for me is a physical act, the joy of tracking motion and on-the-fly adjustment to the machine. I’m more excited to have the 2nd than the 1st because it captures that tension between body and camera
