I find it hard to balance with two legs and two arms, not sure how birds do it with these tiny feet and only wings to flutter about to reposition!

A #DuskyThrush was a pleasant surprise but a bit hard to pick out amongst the bulbuls in the area.

A black-backed #WhiteWagtail. Birds of the World has 10 subspecies while eBird recognizes 9 identifiable subspecies which is a pretty high degree of overlap! I wonder if some (species) splits are in the future of the WHWA.

The male #HouseFinch can exhibit quite the range of color! Redder seems to be more common, but colors like orange, peach, and purpleish are all within the expected range!

Sometimes you read about field marks and think you'll never see them, but this #GreatCormorant was oddly still sporting breeding plumage which really does have white patches in the thigh!

A winsome #GreyHeron that I noticed had a malformed left leg. Even with this issue, I saw it regularly on my walks doing fine and catching plenty of fish.

I was fortunate to catch this #EurasianSparrowhawk as it darted between trees. My initial impression was that I thought I saw a #CoopersHawk like we have in states!

The toughest part of visiting new places (for me at least), thinking every pigeon/dove looks close enough to one I am more familiar with only later to realize that it was a different species! The #OrientalTurtleDove definitely qualified!

A #BlackTailedGull in flight. Several gulls have darker or black-ish tails, but what really stood out to me was the vibrant red on the top of the bill which turns out to be a great field marker to note.

A trifecta of Iowa birds: a male #DownyWoodpecker, a female #RedBelliedWoodpcker, and a female #EasternBluebird. Even in late fall, the colors can pop!

The #BrownEaredBulbul is both a visually and vocally catching bird. The brown "ears" stand out, but so do its calls!

The #CommonPochard I saw in Japan looks a lot like the Redhead and Canvasback in my area. Consulting the Phylogeny Explorer from Cornell Labs shows they are all right next to each other in the genetic tree, so my intuition in this case was spot on! Fun!

Not sure if the #GreyHeron is known for using tools like Green Herons are, but this one would pick up and drop this stick periodically into the water. Perhaps it was just passing the time!

One species of crow is fun to ID, two species is a murder (for your sanity to id). The #LargeBilledCrow on the light post and the slightly slimmer #CarrionCrow in the grass provides fun challenges. Thankfully they vocalize differently!

An #EasternBluebird perched in front of golden fall colors. A joy of photography is on this same tree I caught another EABL with rich red backgrounds -- both accenting different features of our feathery friend!
