If you want a pretty seamless solution for photos which was the most recent thing for me, I'm using ente.io and the transition was not too bad once I had the time to sit down and actually do it!
I pulled basically my entire digital life off of google at the beginning of the year! Gmail -> Startmail, Drive->Filen, Chrome->Hardened Firefox (was already doing this one), and then moved a bunch of phone utilities to FLOSS options from FDroid and Github (Cal, File Browser, Notes app, etc).

Finally got around to backing up my google photos library elsewhere so I can remove all my photos from their cloud and degoogle and divest from big tech just a LITTLE bit more.
I feel like now is a great time while everyone is fired up about Nexstar to remind people that our local Rochester station voted to unionize ages ago and the management is still refusing to bargain with them.
I liked (most of) the people I worked with there but the company, policies, pay structure, and basically everything else are rotten to the top starting just past ground level even.
Not a coincidence that the only coverage this received was from nonprofit news outlets. WROC workers have been struggling for some time - Nexstar’s behavior is shameful and I support this effort.
By the time I left I was making $18/hour (more than most people over there) but also I had switched positions twice and never once did they bother to replace me in those roles and just had me doing double/triple duty through the pandemic. Jumped ship and got an instant 20k/yr raise in a new job.
Not me, side-eying my 900+ titles deep steam library, my switch backlog, and my retro game emulation handheld. Indie titles (from studios that aren't going to be using this sort of thing anyway) have been eating Triple-A gaming's lunch for years now anyway (except Nintendo).

(I should note that over the years I have swapped my HDD to a solid state, added ram, replaced the battery and hard drive cable so I HAVE had to do SOME work to keep it alive)

I moved over to StartMail in the end. Privact focused, built-in, easy, encryption, great aliasing support, custom domain options and it has IMAP support so I can use it with Tunderbird on my phone.
Wordpress is a free install if you have hosting and I think people generally like Ghost as an OSS solution for this type of thing that is fairly cheap, the issue being that Medium is likely gonna have better SEO and it's in a system people already know/use.
Yeah, that's the deal, I now know more than I should need to about DNS management in cloudflare (where I have my domains purchased) after needing to change records three times while trying out different services and only getting that seamless experience on the last one.
Spam free inbox is one of the reasons I chose the mail provider I eventually did. It has GREAT aliasing tools including a setting for burner aliases that stop working after an hour.
I'm thinking of actually eating the $0.99/mo myself and throwing another of the domains I own on it as a backup service.
You absolutely can as long as you're paying for at least the basic tier of iCloud+ (which is, I think $0.99)! I just also wanted some of the other features this mail service had and am also trying to avoid big tech in general as I move things around.
