"Ask Me About Science!"
Got some time and want to engage your community? Grab a whiteboard, find a seat with foot traffic, and see what unfolds!
"Hello! Im a friendly neighborhood scientist, and I work on Linsert area of expertise and practice].
Ask me about science!" written on a whiteboard
What if every scientist spent one afternoon a month just talking about science with strangers?
Last week, I had the pleasure of hearing @beccmel2.bsky.social speak about in-person engagement for @standupforscience.bsky.social.
How can you do that in your community? Try a whiteboard!

Dr Seuss Day: 'Without Oxford University, we don't get Dr Seuss'
To coincide with Dr Seuss Day, the BBC looks back at how Oxford University helped create the icon.
It's #DRSeussDay! Dr Seuss started a doctorate at @ox.ac.uk, but left after a year. Had he stayed longer, he might have become Dr Geisel rather than Dr Seuss.
Oh, the places you'll go...
A great piece on Theodor Geisel in Oxford:

Bengal slow loris, Nycticebus bengalensis, from Laos with 6-week-old baby. Photo: Helena Snyder, Wikimedia Commons
Can slow lorises rescued from the pet trade be translocated and released?
Not easily.
Out of 9 tracked lorises in the study, only 2 survived beyond 6 months. Four were fatally attacked by other lorises. Released lorises showed signs of chronic stress.

Biggest spider web in the world: the area of a flat.
Found in a sulphur-smelling cave in the Balkans, this ~100mΒ² spongy web is maintained by two species of solitary π·οΈ. The 110K inhabitants feed on midges, probably because they can't see the other spiders.

They are two different species.
The American one is the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana. Looks strange, but generally a nice guy.
The Aussie one is the brushtail possum,Trichosurus vulpecula. Looks cute, but is lethal for NZ birds.

You are referring to the Virginia opossum, Didelphis virginiana, native to North America. The articles are about the brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, native to Australia and brought to NZ for fur farming.

Possums
The possum is one of the greatest threats to our natural environment.
Here's a short outline from NZ govt: www.doc.govt.nz/nature/pests...
I don't catch possums - the one time I've been to NZ was some 15 years ago... But I did see a lot of possum socks there!

The birds of New Zealand have not evolved with mammalian predators - many are flightless and ground nesting, and their populations are being hammered by cats, ferrets and possums that have been brought over by humans.

Oreos and uppers: inside the research to get the last 1% of predators
To achieve Predator Free 2050, every last individual predator needs to be caught β and the final few are often the hardest.
Cinnamon and chocolate: a combination to die for.
Brushtail possums, invasive in NZ, can normally be trapped easily. But the most trap-shy animals are a problem: how to target the last few?
Turns out, special edition cinnamon Oreos. More addictive than drugs.
