have you heard of zink? it does exactly what you described, with pretty competitive performance

windbg does let users debug windows from itself (local debugging). its disabled by default bc of security issues (loading unsigned drivers, disabling patchguard). better to debug another machine/vm bc of these reasons + you dont want to be testing on your host system, with potential crashes n all
