I have however found it difficult to find graphics cards that support 1:1, and it's a pain because many of my old displays were 1:1.

Huh. I have never worked with a graphics card or a display system that doesn't support 4:3. I still use a CRT sometimes for displays, though through VGA not DVI. There may have been some cropping going on, but most applications had enough bleed I didn't notice.
