This week #TidyTuesday explores the Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) archive. I filtered the data to focus on Portugal related images and visualized them using circle packing.

This week's #TidyTuesday data is about NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day 🪐

I used the {eyedroppeR} package to pick out some of the colours found in the images and create a grid of treemaps 📊 Space might appear dark to us but it's actually full of bright colours! 🎨

For #tidytuesday week 3, I tried mapping the most commonly photographed astronomical objects in NASA's APOD!

I extracted the entities and then used Wikidata's SPARQL to fetch coordinates, which were mapped onto a nice basemap by NASA. Static image & more in 🧵 #rstats

Histogram showing the distribution of distances mentioned in NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day explanations from 2007-2025, plotted on a logarithmic scale from 1 to 10 billion light-years. The distribution peaks sharply between 1,000 and 2,000 light-years (labeled "The Nebula Peak"), where nebulae and star clusters reside. Five vertical reference lines mark key cosmic landmarks: Proxima Centauri at 4 light-years, the Orion Nebula at 1,500 light-years, the Galactic center at 26,000 light-years, the Milky Way diameter at 100,000 light-years, and the Andromeda Galaxy at 2.5 million light-years. A secondary peak appears around 10-100 million light-years, representing distant galaxies.

Explanation from the Astronomy Picture of the Day: "Taken by a telescope onboard NASA's Swift satellite, this stunning vista represents the highest resolution image ever made of the Andromeda Galaxy (aka M31) - at ultraviolet wavelengths. The mosaic is composed of 330 individual images covering a region 200,000 light-years wide. It shows about 20,000 sources, dominated by hot, young stars and dense star clusters that radiate strongly in energetic ultraviolet light. Of course, the Andromeda Galaxy is the closest large spiral galaxy to our own Milky Way, at a distance of some 2.5 million light-years."

Luckily, it was a database that didn't manage anything /too/ necessary, but it was absolutely a mess. Lessons were learned! 1. Backup your data, and 2. Don't give interns “delete all” buttons. #IWasTheIntern

One day I shall expand on the story of the lowly intern who was somehow given access to a Big Red Button that deleted an entire database, that had not been backed up for a month. #oops
