A sunrise scene in Groningen, The Netherlands, Europe. A canal leads towards the Noordermolen windmill. On the left side of the canal runs a path with a fence, parallel to the canal. Mist crawls from the canal and blows towards the right. Of distant trees, only the top can be seen because of the low mist. The clouds in the sky are reflected in the calm water of the canal. The sun (finally) managed to break through the clouds and is illuminating the entire scene.

Wooden groin (UK: groyne) on the island of Ameland in the province of Frisia (Friesland) in The Netherlands. The groin consists of a row of wooden poles, coming into the image from the bottom left. The image is made around sunset, with the low sun glowing behind a thin layer of clouds. Waves are rolling in, running over the wooden poles. In the foreground, ripples in the sand of the beach are visible.

The GarΓ°ur Old Lighthouse with the glowing Aurora Borealis beyond. From the left of the image, a path leads us to the lighthouse. The lighthouse is no longer in use, but is clearly visible even in low light because the new lighthouse, behind the viewer, is shining its light on it. A layered display of Northern lights, with spikes streaking up into the sky where a faint band of purple light is also visible. The GarΓ°ur lighthouse is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula near the Keflavik airport on Iceland.

A view from Henningsvær on the Lofoten Islands, Norway. Looking out over the sea towards a mountain with sharp peaks, glowing in sunlight. Meanwhile, the rest of the scene is covered in shadow and the sky is dark, creating a stark contrast between the glow of the mountain and the rest of the image. On the foreground, to the left, there's a tiny island. At the foot of the mountain in the background, you can see buildings, providing a sense of scale to the image. The glow on the mountain is reflected in the water, even though a clear reflection of the mountain itself cannot be distinguished. In the top right, a seagull flies into the scene.

A road through the woods near Gasselte, Drenthe, The Netherlands. After a day of rain, the sun made its first appearance about an hour before sunset. As a result, a fog quickly appeared, creating rays of light through the trees. The sunlight is coming from the left of the image. On both side of the road, trees are standing tall in their autumn foliage. Brown leaves are on the ground everywhere, but the road remans visible.

The futuristic looking building L'Hemisfèric in Valencia Spain, photographed from the Pont de Montolivet.
From Wikipedia: L'HemisfΓ¨ric (1998) β an IMAX Cinema, planetarium and laserium. The building is meant to resemble a giant eye, and has an approximate surface of 13,000 m2 (139,931 sq ft). The HemisfΓ¨ric, also known as the planetarium or the "eye of knowledge", is the centerpiece of the City of Arts and Sciences. It was the first building completed in 1998. Its design resembles an eyelid that opens to access the surrounding water pool. The bottom of the pool is glass, creating the illusion of the eye as a whole. This planetarium is a half-sphere in a concrete structure 110 meters (360 ft) long and 55.5 meters (182 ft) wide. The shutter is built of elongated aluminum awnings that fold upward collectively to form a brise soleil roof that opens along the curved axis of the eye. It opens to reveal the dome, the "iris" of the eye, which is the planetarium or Ominax theater. The structure is divided in half by a set of stairs that descend into the vaulted concrete lobby. The underground spaces are illuminated with the use of translucent glass panels within the walking path. The transparent roof is supported by concrete arches that connect to the sunken gallery. There is a remarkable echo in the building and if two people stand at the two opposite pillars inside of the eye they can speak with each other.

There are a lot less nowadays, but there are still quite a few around and many of them are still in working order. Thereβs an online database that mentions 1260 existing windmills in the Netherlands and 18043 windmills that no longer exist. There are 91 windmills in the province where I live.

Aurora Borealis is rarely visible in The Netherlands and when it is, it is usually limited to some purple hues right above the horizon. On this night however, the aurora was shining bright and high in the sky. The image shows a house and a windmill with a fence from the lower right corner leading the viewer to the windmill. Streaks of green to purple are in the sky, from the horizon all the way up to the top part of the screen. A typical Dutch scene, except for the aurora.
I've shown images of the aurora borealis before, but this one, with my #Home on the left side, was really special as the northern light are normally not visible in The Netherlands.

The Tasman Tower apartment building in Groningen, The Netherlands. Photographed during the blue hour, with the wind pushing the clouds away from our vantage point. The jetty and bollards, together with the movement in the clouds, bring a great sense of depth to the image. There is an opening in the clouds right above the apartment building and the (tungsten) colours shining through the windows of the apartments match very well with the deep blue colours in the sky. The clouds are very thick, giving the whole scene an ominous look.
