Congress Is Considering Abolishing Your Right to Be Anonymous Online The bipartisan push to remove anonymity from the internet is ushering in an era of unprecedented mass surveillance and censorship.

“Young people still have human rights, and that includes the right to access information and to associate with other people and to speak to the world. These laws are designed to diminish those rights,” EFF’s David Greene told @TheIntercept. theintercept.com/2026/03/05/...

Hmm. You’re right. Looks like they’re claiming no relation. I personally still wouldn’t take the risk. 😅

Why We Must Fight to Stop HR 7661 Before It Destroys the Lives of American Children Lately I’ve been calling my House rep and screaming about one zillion things, and maybe you have too. But today I want to talk about one thing in particular you should add to your list: H.R. 7661 i…

I wrote about the first national book banning bill, which effectively seeks to erase trans people. At the end I include a link to let your reps know that you oppose this bill and all it stands for. lithub.com/why-we-must-...

Type Help by William Rous The Unsolvable Mystery

Been feeling crushed by everything, so sharing small things that have brought me joy.

Audiobooks: I’ve been listening to Terry Pratchett and @tkingfisher.com and those books have helped a lot.

A Game: A colleague introduced me to Type Help, and it is fantastic. william-rous.itch.io/type-help

‘I Just Stood Up’: The Stunning Arrest Of Aliya Rahman At The State Of The Union Rahman, who was Rep. Ilhan Omar’s guest, suspects she was targeted after testifying to Congress about her brutal ICE detention in Minneapolis.

NEW, from me: I talked to Aliya Rahman, who was dragged out of Tuesday's State of the Union + arrested for... standing up.

Really.

Rahman, who is autistic and has disabilities, was a guest of Rep. Ilhan Omar + was previously brutally detained by ICE in Minneapolis. www.huffpost.com/entry/aliya-...

this bill is legitimately a three-alarm fire. if they manage to define trans existence as explicit then there is nothing stopping them from genocide. i need every single cis person talking about this, calling their reps, getting out in the streets.

Kansas revoking IDs from trans folks overnight is somehow not trending, so sharing again just to keep eyes on it.

Also, if you're repped by Angela Alsobrooks in MD, she's co-sponsoring KOSA and KOSMA, which would give this regime more power to censor trans friends online. Please call or write ASAP!

keep children safe while remaining just as vigilant in defending privacy, free expression, and the right to access information—especially for LGBTQ+ youth, young people of color, and those seeking mental health or reproductive care. It is our responsibility to create a digital world that empowers and protects them without censoring or excluding adult internet users.

One thing is clear—unfettered, unsupervised internet access is hurting our children. However, I also hear the concerns about enabling an increasingly censorious Trump Administration to further restrict dissenting viewpoints. As the Administration invokes “defending children” to justify its repressive, regressive policies, it is more important than ever that we pass legislation that actually defends children instead of just professing to do so. I cosponsored KOSA to take meaningful steps toward holding tech companies accountable for the harm their platforms can cause and to give families more tools to protect their children online. I support this legislation because I believe we must act urgently to safeguard children’s mental health, well-being, and safety—while also ensuring the bill is implemented in ways that protect free expression, privacy, and access to essential resources for all young people. I also cosponsored KOSMA to help limit children’s social media access and empower parents to set healthier boundaries for teens. Together, these efforts reflect my broader commitment to creating a safer, healthier digital environment for the next generation—one that protects without silencing and empowers without excluding. Should additional legislation pertaining to online safety come before me in the U.S. Senate, I will consider it with your views in mind.

Thank you for contacting me about online safety and privacy. Your concerns are important to both me and my team as we work tirelessly to serve the people of Maryland.

Online safety refers to the ability of individuals to navigate the internet without unknowingly having their personal data gathered and without being targeted by fraudsters, scammers, and other bad actors. For children, internet safety also means safeguarding against exposure to harmful content such as cyberbullying, suicide promotion, body idealization, substance abuse, and sexual exploitation. In Congress, there are several current proposals to improve online safety. S. 1748, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), would mandate safer default settings for minors, limitations on addictive features, tools for parental oversight, and opt-out options for algorithmic recommendations. It would also enforce transparency through third-party audits and reporting and allow enforcement by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). S. 278, the Kids Off Social Media Act (KOSMA), would restrict social media access for children under 13 and prohibit social media platforms from using minors’ personal data to recommend content. S. 737, the Shielding Children’s Retinas from Egregious Exposure on the Net (SCREEN) Act, would require all commercial adult content websites to adopt age verification technology to ensure children cannot access their content.

As a mother, I understand firsthand how deeply families worry about the dangers young people face online. Like so many parents, I want every child to be able to explore, learn, and connect without being exposed to harmful content, targeted by predators, or manipulated by algorithms designed to keep them scrolling. But I also know that protecting kids should never come at the cost of silencing vulnerable communities, restricting access to critical resources, or giving the government the power to unjustly invade individuals’ privacy. We must take real action to (cont next post)
