implicitly ceding the point on β€œif only we killed the *right* people”

Part of me understands the impulse here, depending on how phrased. Like, I think that it is *also* true that this war is objectionable *even if* you were targeting completely unsympathetic targets. And so I see how one could feel that framing objection in terms of β€œthey killed children” is…

opportunities compared to the more overt methods of raw power. But I also think that everyone with more political power than like, a mayor should basically have to divest from any assets other than index funds and a primary home lol (minimally considered, weakly held)

My feeling is that markets are largely value-neutral reflections of the extra-market constraints we impose as a society (which are themselves the reflection of our values, and of which I think there should be many). I think one of the worst things they enable is very *opaque* enrichment…

did you mean β€œdo not live” instead of β€œdo it live”? I think this has led to a very funny miscommunication

04.03.2026 13:36 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

That makes sense. I think I just don’t see *markets* as the uniquely load-bearing component of β€œthose with power will be incentivized to victimize the less fortunate to enrich themselves”. In the words of Don Draper, β€œthat’s what the power is for!”

Is it the *directness* of the thing that makes it more distressing to you, or is this a much broader critique of markets than I’m reading it as? It seems to me that anyone with market-market moving geopolitical power has more or less always had the ability to make insane amounts of money off it

one of the things that makes me a little worried is that I feel some of the reliance comes from developing intuition about the idiosyncrasies of these tools and preemptively prompting against them. but once the reliance sets in just have to hope new models aren’t too different!

this is my unattributed understanding as well, with an additional wrinkle: the specific unlock was a brewing process that produced an effectively flavorless baseβ€”prior versions like Mike’s Hard Lemonade needed strong flavoring and lots of sugar to cover up the weird taste of the base

IOW without disclosure upfront I think the overwhelming assumption is that you’re speaking in your own voice! I don’t have that for a cake

I think my bar for β€œis it weird/not” is whether you have 1) read the text in its entirety and 2) are comfortable effectively β€˜ratifying’ it in your voice. If I read something from a colleague and have a question/comment/correction I don’t wanna hear β€œoh idk claude wrote that”

But is it weird to give to someone with no claim as to the production process? I think the default assumptions differ

I’m quite happy I don’t need to reason about those silly error messages anymore. Unclear whether I ever was reasoning about them though.

I don’t even think you need to introduce all the different layers here to get somewhere interesting! Like, restricting yourself to a simplified world model where compiler diagnostics are a deterministic function of their inputs it is a miracle that the computer can fix them ~100% of the time!
