π¨New global review and next stepsπ¨
Intentional take of #seabirds for human consumption is happening in at least 56 countries and affects >100 migratory species. Data on sustainability, population impacts, and human health risks are often missing.

I knowww! But hooray! π
β³ Deadline approaching!
This is a final reminder that our Training Grants closes on the 28th of February.
If you are from a BAME background, and would like to gain seabird volunteering/ ringing experience we can provide support up to Β£250.

Issue #161 of our newsletter should have hit your inbox or doormat! π
We call for hosts for our 2027 conference, hear about an ancient storm petrel specimen and are updated on one of Europe's largest Sandwich tern colonies. ποΈπ£

This image shows the cover of issue 37 of SEABIRD journal by The Seabird Group. It is of a ringed guillemot with two small chicks, standing on a rocky wall. There are other parent birds with chicks in the background.
#Seabird Journal issue #37 is complete and has been sent out to those who requested a physical copy π

Hey, fellow evolutionary biologists:
If you support trans rights, like, comment, or repost this. I want to show that transphobes like Richard Dawkins are a loud minority that does not represent our community

And that's a wrap! The last of the European #stormie chicks that we monitored on #NΓ³lsoy #FaroeIslands has fledged. This field season was a huge success, with 55 eggs laid, 47 chicks hatched, and 34 chicks fledged!
Early-career ornithologists take note!! The next EOU Fledglings meeting will take place in Gdansk in March 2026. Please RT! #ornithology
Schematic diagram of the influence of seabirds on temperate and tropical near-shore marine systems. Temperatre systems: - Nutrient enrichment and predation on herbivorous invertebrates can lead to increased algal production - Phytoplankton communities change, featuring more large-celled species - Intertidal organisms incorporate seabird-enriched material by grazing on detritus and biofilm in tidepools - Macroalgae biodiversity and primary production are boosted Tropical systems: - Mangrove leaf nutritional quality increases - Corals recover faster after bleaching events - Fish biomass increases across different trophic groups - Pelagic and benthic consumers' foraging behaviour shifts - Parrotfish grazing and bioerosion rates increase - Fish grow larger

Fun is the most important part, tho
We only have 5 days left before the last of our team leaves the #FaroeIslands, but these chicks still have some growing to do!
Neither of these chicks will likely fledge before we have to head out, after having spent almost 90 days in the Faroe Islands! The young chick on these photos is 5 - 7 days old (we don't check daily) while the older one is 45 - 46 days old. We also still have two eggs remaining!
