Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe In 2012: 'This Isn't 10 Years Away'
From my archives is this interview with Brendan Iribe in 2012 explaining the plan for Oculus.
"This isn't 10 years away," the CEO of Oculus, Brendan Iribe, said in 2012 about VR being good enough for mass market consumers.

Currently, the only means available for playing light gun games outside of an arcade (especially the old console ports) is EmuVR.
The physical tech only works with CRT displays otherwise, which most no longer have.

VR is the ultimate sandbox.
Some of the most skilled game developers in the world have built out true hobbies in 3D with presence.
When Valve aligns the input of tracked controllers with gamepads, ripping frames off two dimensions becomes a bigger sandbox too — and comfortable to 99.9% of players.

Recreation Rooms: Arlen Kundert Walks Around Skyrim VR In His Basement
Arlen Kundert walked more than 11 days across Tamriel on his Kat Walk.
Some people play truly immersive VR games like Golf+, H3VR, Walkabout, No Man’s Sky, Skyrim VR and others with such passion that a single place is where they spend 99% of their time in headset.

It should exist because, for that tiny fraction of the audience, they will never play Stardew Valley any other way once they play it unbounded. For them, it will be so superior that if a fire rages through their home they will grab the headset on the way out the door to take that place with them.

If “Unbounded” Stardew Valley was offered as a mod, it either breaks or improves the game depending how you play. So only a small subset of players could or would actually use this mod.
If only 1% of 1% of the people who play a beloved game will enjoy it this way, why should it exist?

You could see all the residents of Stardew Valle going about their business at the same time you chop down a tree in one corner of the map. You wouldn’t have to spend as much time searching for people or objects you want to achieve your goals.

Imagine a screen so large you could tilt your head a bit to look around the entire map of Stardew Valley at one time instead of just seeing a window into it. I don’t mean the world is suddenly 3D, I mean the full flat map is visible to you because your screen is no longer bound in a frame.

Requiring two different kinds of controllers to enjoy all your games in VR is madness, and both weight reduction and input inconsistency are exactly the problems Steam Frame aims to solve in a way Quest could not.

Apple Vision Pro Is Primarily An Augmented Virtuality Headset
There are four distinct regions of interaction inside Apple Vision Pro.
VR still isn’t “functionally better” for gaming. It is still not called VR by the largest companies on the planet. It is still too heavy. Staring at reality with the unaided eye without a brick on the face is still better in more than 99% of gaming use. www.goodvirtualreality.com/p/apple-visi...

Oculus team building immersive gaming goggles
Strap on the headset and adjust the goggle to your eyes. Look down and you’ll see the floor of a space station. Look up and pipes weave above your head. Turn left or right and the tight walls…
When I look at quotes I surfaced from places like Oculus and Stanford in 2012, I find some of these words almost hysterically funny in retrospect because of how they describe the hurdles still present in 2026.
Everything changed and nothing has.

When you consider this work alongside the awesome volumetric ideas of @notsuspicioushq.bsky.social & @tovanbo.bsky.social it is like these developers are building for a mixed reality platform that isn’t architected (yet) just for these kinds of ideas.
Platforms must shift to meet devs here.

Sorry about that, I don’t know how to remove that link temporarily until I make the podcast free for all listeners.
I’ve published it as a benefit to paid subscribers first, will plan to make it free for all.
Should I post a truncated free version of the podcast too?

Oh, that makes more sense but actually makes me dramatically less interested in going.
The roadblocks to VR adoption are everywhere you look and not being able to bring your own HMD to an event for enthusiasts is a big one.

I’ve talked with the Voices of VR podcast several times over the years between 2019 and 2026.
Looking back at these conversations offers some easily forgotten details showing just how competitive this market is. open.substack.com/pub/goodvr/p...
