The Grand Mononoke - 具乱怒物乃怪［ぐらんどもののけ] - An absurd chimerical-yokai which featured among UMA in an issue of Keibunsha in 1987. Today it's a cult-favourite adored for its absurdity. Supposedly lives in Tohoku, it grows up to 10m and eats livestock in one bite! - samkalensky.com/products/gra...

Menreiki - (面霊気) - [Yokai | Noh mask] - "Spirit-Masks" - "Sixty Six Ancient Noh Masks that where said to be brought to life as they where perhaps "enchanted the talent of the performer who first wore them."  These masks, once used in outstanding performances, gained a soul themselves: Either from the essence of the performers raw talent, or perhaps through the following decades of neglect... It has been said that when Noh masks are left alone; they may move at night, if more than 4 are gathered they might start talking.. It's important to take good care of such treasures!"

Toriyama sekien’s "Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bokuro" (1784). Toriyama’s included verse, goes roughly as follows: “As Emperor Ming of Tang sat reading, a tiny human appeared on his desktop. The Emperor shouted; his servant declared that the creature was an ink-fairy and it disappeared. Perhaps the Choku-boron I saw in my dream are similar sorts.” - [Translation: Japandemonium 2017]

Chokuboron - [tsukumogami] - A set of miniature sake-cups that were dropped and cracked! Hyōtan-kozō - [yokai] - Once a hollow drinking gourd; used like a bottle or flask, but instead of holding “spirits" it was used superstitiously as a vessel to trap bad luck. it became a sickly Tsukumogami. It pops out of thickets, causing monks to riot in prayer! - samkalensky.com/products/hyo...

Toriyama Sekien’s "Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bokuro" (1784). The illustrated scene depicts the inside of a tailor's shop including measuring tools, a kimono rack and sewing kits strewn about. A lit incense burner burns nearby. The yokai appears as a silken striped cloth with a tanuki's face, feet, and tail. It sits flopped and folded over onto itself, and appears to be coming out of a decorated fabric box. Toriyama’s included verse goes as follows: “Tanuki are usually described as beating their bellies like drums, which reminds me of beating laundry on the banks of the Tama river. The tama [jewel] of which reminds me of the “family jewels” of a tanuki, transformed into hachijo [eight spans of] Kinu [silk]. So I dreamed” - [Japandemonium illustrated 2017]

It’s worth mentioning that this was made by six guys in their dorm room for a sci-fi convention, and all six of them (which includes the creator of Evangelion) would go on to define the anime industry for decades to come.
