Save what we love. I repost a lot. I like to amplify. The flower in my avatar is a cereus, or orchid cactus. The banner is my cat Madmartigan’s paw on a knitting project of mine, red and blue two color brioche. My media tab is mostly cats and knitting.

The thing about ai that companies don’t understand (because their advertising departments are run by out of touch sociopaths only interested in “line go up”) is people perceive ai ads as CHEAP. Like damn you can’t even afford a commercial? Why would I buy your product?

Panel 2: to the mans surprise, the other passengers begin applauding and cheering
Panel 3: You can see the man smile as people around him say things like "What a guy!" and "So considerate!"

a four-panel stick-figure cartoon

panel one:
three standing figures. from left to right, a guy wearing a necktie looking at his phone, an angry MAGA guy yelling FUCK YOUR FUCKIN POST FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU, and a rando just standing there like an NPC.

panel two:
the guy looking at his phone shows MAGA guy his hand, causing MAGA to vanish. the word Block hangs in the air where fuckface once was. a green-bordered in-game message appears, reading "+2 Mental Health." now the rando is suddenly interested.

panel three:
as our man continues doom-scrolling, a sly grin on his face, the rando on the right puts on a punch-me face and snarls: "Typical lefty, blocking everyone who disagrees with-"

panel four
phone guy shows the hand to punch-me face, causing the rando to vanish. the word Block hangs in the air where that dickhead was. a green-bordered in-game message appears again, reading "+2 Mental Health."

Ofelia Torres, teen who fought to have her father released from ICE custody, dies from rare cancer Ofelia Torres, 16, died on Friday from Stage 4 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer, her father's lawyer confirmed.

This brave child fought cancer & ICE.
Her father should have never been in custody in the first case. Trump & Noem stole precious moments from them.
If you do not see how wrong this is, you have no soul.

ya i was running out of characters so didn't specify. but it did used to be the case that christian denominations were highly regional (including evangelical baptists being mostly in the south) in a way that's increasingly not true as evangelicals eat the mainline denominations

a lot of discussion about how "cosmopolitan" urban dwellers are, but a really underdiscussed trend is the homogenization of culture across *rural* areas of the USA - replacement of once-distinct regional cultures with generic "redneck" accent and culture, regional religions with evanglicalism etc

and that's us too i think. the mighty american empire got shot in the back 3 times: in 2000, 2016 and 2024, but each time we were like an inch away from it missing us entirely and if that had happened in any of those 3 cases we'd probably be basically fine today

i wrote a paper in my college class on the french revolution about how so many schools of history portray the revolution as the nearly inevitable outcome of long term trends in france when i think the truth is it was the highly improbable product of a cascade of micro-level fuck ups by Louis XVI

The same thing we've done about it in this country for 250 years: make baby steps toward progress, fall on our ass when it gets pushed backward, and start over again.

Famously, the Supreme Court under FDR started ruling in favor of the New Deal just at the moment when it became possible that the president was going to pack the court, and I think we ought to consider that fact.

Dr. Preston Robinson, the inventor of the tantalum trigger for the first atomic bombs,[10] and his wife, lived in a very pleasant post modern house on Bulkley Street in the town.[11] Webb donated the copyright of 'The Graduate' to the Anti-Defamation League. He and his wife donated most of their possessions including art by Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol. They lived out of a VW Bus in campgrounds, trailer parks and nudist colonies working odd jobs while home-schooling their children.[8]

Every sentence of this Wikipedia paragraph about the author of THE GRADUATE is more interesting than the novel and film THE GRADUATE.

How Pixar’s Open Sexism Ruined My Dream Job (Guest Column) A former Pixar employee writes that after John Lasseter's departure, the company still has a lot of work to do to fix its sexist culture.

If you're wondering how bad things were at Pixar for women, the answer is pretty horrifyingly bad.

Pixar’s Pete Docter Says Queer ‘Elio’ Storyline Was Axed Because “We’re Making A Movie, Not Hundreds Of Millions Of Dollars Of Therapy” Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter explained the animation company's decision to ax a queer storyline in last year's Elio.

Am I surprised that a man who was able to thrive at a company where women weren't allowed in the same room as the boss, because he'd grope them, appears to have no ethical backbone? Not even a little.

Yes! It has to do with - and here I'm outside of my element - the evolution of sailing technology.

Smaller crews managing more complicated line/sail systems needed to be MUCH more coordinated, so it became more important to organize work across the deck all at once.

My personal favorites are "Capstan Chants." A capstan is a big winch used to put manpower to raising an anchor chain, where everyone walks in a circle around it pushing their own pole.

They'd be long, with call and response and a "Grand Chorus."

Then there's "PULL AS HARD AS YOU CAN AS FAST AS YOU CAN." Very brief hauling tasks, like making a halyard as taut as possible, getting those last few inches of slack out of the line. Those are "Sweating-Up" Chants.

Shanties were often call and response, and were divided into the different jobs.

There were Halyard/Long Drag shanties. Halyards are lines (ropes) used to hoist ladders, sails, etc. It's heavy, long work, and you'd coordinate two pulls per chorus.

Shanties are a form of Work Song - they coordinate effort on a ship, and keep people to a rhythm, while keeping them engaged during truly boring work.

If a song is sung JUST for entertainment it's called a Forecastle/Fo'c'sle/Forebiter Song.
