I meant for Egyptian sign language pronouns. There’s a bit of a theoretical debate about if mouthing is borrowing or code blending or what exactly in other sign languages. I recommend Bisnath 2024 “Mouthing constructions in 37 sign languages: typology, ecology, and ideology”

The mouthing is not obligatory and there is a lot of variation in mouthing in generally

Follow up— we got a lot of really cool lexical variation
Interestingly, the Cairene signing variety seems widespread throughout Upper Egypt but it’s actually the north that seems to vary more
Certain semantic fields vary much more than others (colors vary quite little, fruits and veggies greatly)

Because we’re moving between different regions every 2-3 days fieldwork is really exhausting this time but we’re doing so many interviews and learning so much about regional lexical variation

Anyone who is interested in the Nubian language should know about Mohammed Metwally Badr (1909-1988) and his works.
He published a grammar of Nobiin in Arabic in 1955 and a pedagogical textbook for beginners in 1976 called "Read in Nubian"
