Follow upโ we got a lot of really cool lexical variation
Interestingly, the Cairene signing variety seems widespread throughout Upper Egypt but itโs actually the north that seems to vary more
Certain semantic fields vary much more than others (colors vary quite little, fruits and veggies greatly)
Because weโre moving between different regions every 2-3 days fieldwork is really exhausting this time but weโre doing so many interviews and learning so much about regional lexical variation
For @jmhenner.bsky.social. We โ @savithry.bsky.social and I โ wrote โHow to crip your sign language linguistic theoryโ. Open access.

Linguistic examples should not just be translated but also be glossed. What makes a good gloss? In the ELSEA project we created a 10min knowledge clip explaining interlinear glossing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATS...
Absolutely.
People also differ in power and privilege so how languages mix also reflects this.
Itโs important to understand sometimes the push for linguistic โpurityโ reflects these unequal language dynamics: this is how I contextualise anti-English sentiments in the BSL and Auslan communities.

He also published a collection of Nubian proverbs and according to the "About the author section" of his grammar, had a dictionary of Nobiin and a book titled "Lands Under the Waters of the Dam" in press
Anyone who is interested in the Nubian language should know about Mohammed Metwally Badr (1909-1988) and his works.
He published a grammar of Nobiin in Arabic in 1955 and a pedagogical textbook for beginners in 1976 called "Read in Nubian"
