Stuck at home with the flu and had to cancel my talk at SALSA today on Egyptian SL toponymsโ€” those interested can check out the interactive map of city/governorate names here: egysignmaps.github.io

I meant for Egyptian sign language pronouns. Thereโ€™s a bit of a theoretical debate about if mouthing is borrowing or code blending or what exactly in other sign languages. I recommend Bisnath 2024 โ€œMouthing constructions in 37 sign languages: typology, ecology, and ideologyโ€

The mouthing is not obligatory and there is a lot of variation in mouthing in generally

Follow upโ€” we got a lot of really cool lexical variation
Interestingly, the Cairene signing variety seems widespread throughout Upper Egypt but itโ€™s actually the north that seems to vary more
Certain semantic fields vary much more than others (colors vary quite little, fruits and veggies greatly)

Because weโ€™re moving between different regions every 2-3 days fieldwork is really exhausting this time but weโ€™re doing so many interviews and learning so much about regional lexical variation

How to crip your sign language linguistic theory Abstract. The language practices and experiences of racially and ethnically minoritized users of signed languages have been largely ignored or marginalized

A research by Najla Alghamdi (2022) suggests that "we are witnessing an emergence of a dialect that can be called a Saudi Koine. One of the characteristics of this koine is that it features a double-sided pole, a Najdi pole and a Hijazi pole.

Interlinear glossing
Interlinear glossing YouTube video by Enhancing Linguistic Scholarship in Eastern Africa

Linguistic examples should not just be translated but also be glossed. What makes a good gloss? In the ELSEA project we created a 10min knowledge clip explaining interlinear glossing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATS...

Absolutely.
People also differ in power and privilege so how languages mix also reflects this.
Itโ€™s important to understand sometimes the push for linguistic โ€˜purityโ€™ reflects these unequal language dynamics: this is how I contextualise anti-English sentiments in the BSL and Auslan communities.

#Linguistics folks, do you know of any research on whether interlinear glossing helps learners acquire morphology? especially for language revitalization contexts?

He also published a collection of Nubian proverbs and according to the "About the author section" of his grammar, had a dictionary of Nobiin and a book titled "Lands Under the Waters of the Dam" in press

Anyone who is interested in the Nubian language should know about Mohammed Metwally Badr (1909-1988) and his works.
He published a grammar of Nobiin in Arabic in 1955 and a pedagogical textbook for beginners in 1976 called "Read in Nubian"
