A bearded man sits on the floor of an open bank vault. A USB stick and lanyard levitate in a figure eight above his open palm. Over his right eye, he wears a strange metallic eyepatch that has four long prongs. At the top of the image, a close-up of his intense gaze stares directly at the viewer.

I think drawing exclusively traditionally for the last half year (whoa, time flies) has helped reset my digi-art brain. I feel like I became too reliant on infinite "ctrl+z"s, zooming, transforming, etc., and it was hurting my process overall. Hopefully the lessons I've learned stick once I go back.

Fun fact: I've got a website now! It's bare-bones right now, but I have PLANS. I'll be posting the rest of this series + any other future finished pieces there (and here too). I've even added an RSS feed if you're into that kind of thing!

I've been getting back into comics while I wait for more info from my concept job, and I thought I'd make a post about something very important to me, which is COMIC PANEL VARIATION and HOW TO THINK ABOUT IT.

If you care about pixel art as a medium and want to learn more about how to detect if it is genuine or AI-generated, please refer to this writeup that I created with the help of the community. Read, download, share and support real creators.

I have lots of unpolished thoughts, RE: community building, but I'd hazard a guess that communities only succeed when there's a healthy mix of give and take: if each person simply posts their own creations expecting external feedback but never supports other people, then the community will wither.

I get sad when people in creator communities reserve their reacts/comments for the crème de la crème.

Like, c'monnn: it costs nothing to encourage others! Even if their art/writing/game/whatever isn't technically impressive! Even if it's amateurish!

Ink drawing of a living room which has been shaded in various tones of grey via alcohol markers. From only a few feet off the ground, the viewer sits a short distance from a simple coffee table, across which is a long couch. In the background, we can see an open doorway, as well as a flatscreen TV hanging on a different wall.

A square ink drawing of a cemetery. A path weaves through a grassy field and up a simple stone staircase. Various paths are lined with low stone walls. Grave stones dot the landscape. Along the horizon, many coniferous trees silhouette the sky.

Forever echoing in my brain: if a person couldn't be bothered to put in the effort to make something, then why in the world would I bother putting in the effort to engage with it.

An ink drawing of the upper half of a man in a dark suit jacket. The man looks off camera to his left. His arms would be crossed if not for his right hand, which is raised to lightly touch his neck.

Still accumulating ink experience. I'm drawing lots of people, lots of trees, lots of shaded spheres. Definitely not where I want to be yet, but the only way I'll level up is by persistently hiking outside of my comfort zone.

an ink drawing of a woman. she sits aiming towards the left and looks over her shoulder to the right while holding a camera in her left hand. she wears baggy clothes, although her jacket is open enough to reveal her bra and her left shoulder. her straight hair is chin-length and black.

I've been experimenting with traditional inking as of late, and: 1. inking is SO COOL, but 2. inking is SO HARD, especially 3. when you make your original sketch wayyy too small.

I've been getting really into traditional art techniques as of late, especially trying to bridge them with my digital techniques, and it's all such a blast!!

Relatedly, I just got a bunch of new drawing utensils, which means concocting ALL THE EXPERIMENTS.

my art brain has grown increasingly melty over these last few weeks as i chip chip chip away at one specific character's design.

like, how have none of these designs felt remotely correct??? it's a statistical wonder!

Chatbots β€” LLMs β€” do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re β€œright” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
