HECK YEAH IT DID
HECK YEAH IT DID
Letβs get you that B&O tax exemption!!!!!
81 amendments. 22 hours. 1 roadmap to fairness, equity and taxation and a future that didnβt exist 25 hours ago. #waleg
This oneβs for the dreamers, the ones who arenβt afraid to say βwhy notβ when they say it canβt be done. We dare to dream of a better, more fair, more just, and more prosperous state. And then we work. Like. Hell. #waleg
51 to 46. We did it. #waleg
"An oral roll call vote has been requested." The final one. #waleg
"Washingtonians have waited too long, 93 years, for a tax code that works for all of us" Rep Fitzgibbon. #waleg
"We are asking a quarter of one percent of Washingtonians to chip in. So we can expand the Working Families Tax Credit, so we can exempt essentials like diapers and soap, we can invest in our K-12 schools and universities, we can protect people on Medicare..." Rep Fitzgibbon #waleg
Rep Fitzgibbon rises to say that we don't have to be the Cayman Islands of the United States to be a great place to live: "We all do better when we all do better." #waleg
Pie crust promises! Drink! (Water for me) #waleg
It strikes me that the Democratic speeches were based on joy, hope, and a bright vision for the future of our state. Republican speeches are very...bleak. I believe in this state and what it can do, that's why I want it to have the resources to unlock our neighbors' potential. #waleg
Republican claims this bill didn't get a full hearing and comment from the public. This bill has been heard in Senate Ways and Means, the Senate Floor, heard again in the House Finance committee, and the last 24 hours on the House floor. Our system doesn't allow a more full process tbh #waleg
Republicans keep saying that the millionaire's tax is unpopular, but that's just not born out by any research. If you ask voters this is an extremely popular policy. #waleg
We're officially over 24 hours, friends. I'm going to burn my clothes after this. #waleg
I wish Republicans would actually just let a Seattle member talk about what it's like in Seattle, I wouldn't talk about what's going on in Puyallup businesses. #waleg
Republican metaphors in this speech: "fig leaves" "Like a green banana" #waleg
Rep Street also notes: That's extra cash for medications and what you buy in the grocery store. "I'm voting to cut taxes on working families... that's why I've been here for over 24 hours to vote yes" #waleg
"This tax on income over $1 million/year will double the working families tax credit, putting money back in families' pockets... a married couple today has to make $64,000 to qualify, after today's expansion they can make up to $114,000. That's extra cash for the mortgage or rent" #waleg
Rep Street rises to talk: Notes that the Chrysler Airflo and drive-in movies were invited the last time we meaningfully changed our tax code in 1933. "While our economy has changed, our tax code has not kept up. If our economy is going to evolve, so do the needs of Washingtonians" #waleg
So proud of my fellow members of the Curly Hair Caucus, Rep Thomas and Rep Hill for giving great remarks on this historic bill. #waleg
"I'm so glad one of our priorities this year were to make Washington a-fjord-able again... including the $15 minimum wage, public financing for campaigns, and just yesterday the Domestic Workers bill of rights" notes that she did not have to fight the Governor to get this done. #waleg
Rep Thomas: "Millionaires pay 4% in taxes. Working folks like pay 11% of their income in taxes. But the people were were sent here to help pay 14% of their income in taxes...the millionares just got a big 'ol break from the feddy gov with HR 1, so maybe they wouldn't mind investing at home" #waleg
Rep Thomas rises to speak. "First, the House a lot like me, is not afraid to pick a fight. Is not afraid to throw down, as you have seen in the last 24 hours of uninterrupted thunder dome. All of my colleagues are feral for justice in their own ways for their own districts" #waleg
Also while I normally am team "let's control this debate" -- this really is a historic bill and vote. It's worth taking the time to ensure every voice is heard, especially those we disagree with. Admittedly, I could have done this in 12 hours, but it's not up to me. #waleg
At this point, not a whole lot. The only things we can pass at this point our concurrence votes on bills that were changed in the senate, and the three budget bills, which we can't always take action on without senate action either.
Rep Macri: "As our state has grown, our ability to rely on sales tax to provide basic services has diminished" #waleg
Rep Walsh rises with his traditional, "Bad bill, vote no" before launching into his speech. #waleg
"From the wheat farmers in Eastern Washington the oyster farmers in the Hood Canal -- which I've learned recently is a fjord." says Rep Hill. #waleg
"If you make between 64,000-120,000 in WA, you're paying no income tax. In Idaho you're paying about $6800" sys Rep Hill, noting Oregon has 9.9% tax on the first dollar earned. #waleg
Rep Hill rises next, "It feels really good to be asking you for an epic yes vote on this legislation.... the truth is, millionaires would pay more in other states, and even our youth today understand the difference between 6...7 figures" Booooooo #waleg
