Chapters - The Nature Record Now it’s our turn to shape what comes next. A new project. A mission years in the making.

~34% of plant & 40% of animal species are at risk of extinction; human pressures on nature are eroding water, food, health, livelihoods..but there is also hope in the pages and the ability to chart a new course: www.nytimes.com/2026/03/05/c... (gift).

Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El Niño

Climate breakdown is occurring more rapidly with the heating rate almost doubling, according to research that excludes the effect of natural factors behind the latest scorching temperatures.

Pyramidion of Ramose is owned by Museo Egizio, Turin and isn’t an Egyptian loan. Acquired as part of their founding collection thru purchase by Italian royal house, through process typical of antiquities collecting, which modern observers view as colonial displacement…ie, stolen.

So a team of scientists think more daylight would be beneficial and outside this article, there are a completely opposite team of scientists trying to block the sun to mitigate against extreme heat.

There has to be some consequence in science for being both ignorant and dangerous.

Happy Birthday, Chicago!
Chicago adopted its motto “Urbs in Horto” (“City in a Garden”) in the 1830s to express both a geographical reality and a civic aspiration. 1/4

These data center developers asked Trump for an exemption from pollution rules Though the companies weren't granted exemptions, their requests illustrate the data center industry's desperate quest for energy.

AI supremacy.
Diesel generators.
Clean Air Act exemptions.

The future is here….and it still smells like combustion.

Turns out “innovation” mostly means finding faster ways to ignore limits.

Local & state regulatory bodies aren't any better:
⏺️ They have "business & job concerns"
⏺️ Compliance & enforcement is weak, low fines & rely on resident complaints
⏺️ Air permits are really permits to pollute
⏺️ Data centers are mainly real estate deals, bypassing oversight & air permitting processes

Most of Illinois is in a drought, and the state is unprepared Outdated water use laws, destruction of wetlands, demands of data centers and extreme weather are a dangerous mix.

I'm in the @chicago.suntimes.com today:

Illinois is dangerously dry, and we have no legal framework to manage large water users.

Illinois' historic water abundance bred complacency.

We still rely on centuries old English water law, totally unequipped for modern population & industrial usage.

Wildlife policy has entered a strange phase where killing is marketed as education, profit is framed as stewardship, and eradication is sold as management.

Wolves are a complex part of functioning ecosystems being turned into a revenue stream.

This isn’t conservation. It’s commodification.

Serious ethical issues, but releasing lab-engineered proxies of extinct species doesn’t restore ecosystems that shaped it. @race2extinct.bsky.social nails it.

Also diverts attention & funding from preventing current 🐺 extinctions.

Chicago Traffic Deaths Reach A 9-Year Low, But Funding Cuts Could Threaten Progress The city recorded 100 traffic deaths last year, the lowest total since 2016. But city bond funding for the Complete Streets and Vision Zero programs are set to decrease 85 percent by 2029.

“If we don’t have the [bond] money for the Complete Streets projects in the future, we’re just going to kind of resurface the road, call it a day and revisit it down the line,” Perez said. “It’s a one-time opportunity to redo the street and make it safe for the coming generation.”

Takes 10-15yrs (for some 20yrs) to stand up. In meantime, what are immediate steps…renewables, efficiency, modernization, grid upgrades, storage? They’ll try all of the above, but won’t stave off higher energy costs; data center revenue is way too appealing. Decreasing demand is the best path imo.

What causes wildfires? A spark, in the presence of fuel and oxygen, can cause a fire, which can further spread depending on various weather conditions. Fires can be sparked by natural causes, but most wildfires in the U.S. are caused by human activity. Natural causes include lightning strikes and heat from the sun. Human activity comes from cigarette butts, fireworks, campfires, burning brush, vehicles and machinery. Fuel is usually dry vegetation, such as grass brush, and trees. Oxygen is almost everywhere. Certain weather conditions can make fires bigger, faster, and more dangerous: strong wind, drought, high temperatures and low humidity.
