Turns out my problem was that my graphics card was a 10-year old potato with 4G of VRAM. Fixing that fixed all my games, even with 56 cores
I ditched Windows ~20 years ago, and while being forced to use it for my day job has been a shock, peoples reactions to my frustration has been even more shocking. "yeah, the start menu doesn't work in $ENVIRONMENT. Just open a prompt and run what you need from there." It's like I'm in bizzaro-world

I use fgallery (www.thregr.org/wavexx/softw...) for that; if you're OK with command line tools, I can strongly recommend it. It's command-line only, but if you like the way the output looks, a GUI would be fairly simple to make.
