lets contributors connect their GitHub account with Discord to get a special contributor role.

npmx has seen nearly 100 contributors in just a week so doing this manually would have been more painful, especially into the future, than automating it.

our http queue had spikes *after* the api bans, but they were moderate without ever being above 100 (valid) requests (they all respect the ratelimit headers as well)

it looks like that other bigger bots had the same issue at the exact same hour we had

internal monitoring didn't show up any invalid nor spamming requests. In total, we only get roughly 5-10 requests/hour that even have the ratelimit headers attached, none of them having 0 remaining.

Invalid requests are at roughly 210/d.

In the last 12 hours, we experienced several discord API bans and token resets.

we are actively trying to resolve this issue with discord. The bot currently is fully operational globally again, though expect degraded performance in certain regions.

that's not really the point I'm making. my point is the choice, and overwhelming signup experience.

please don't forget: just because you understand tech and atproto, doesn't mean your mum or sister does.

if you want non-tech people to churn, just not bother with it, and keep the network small, sure.

If signup is friction-less and you as a service aren't actively pushing for centrilization (i.e. using bluesky), another PDS host is ok imo—as ling as you're not a big player.

the moderation concern still would exist even if the app wasn't on atproto. Though yes the PDS would potentially see different service use which is fair.

If you absolutely do not want to deal with it, offer zero-friction sign-ups through another trusted PDS provider. Ideally not bluesky

you still get the benefits of an open protocol, but it makes onboarding so much easier and allows for decentralization to actually happen.

If everyone is asked (or not even asked anything) to create an account on bsky dot social, decentralization is useless.
